How much would it cost to switch my "fat" 700x35c tires to thinner 700x28x tires that are decent quality, similar to the ones that come with the Trek 7.2FX. Also, would I have to replace the tubing? I would assume you would, but I am not exactly sre.

Yes, I would replace the tubes. You could probably make the larger ones work- but they're cheap enough I'd just buy new tubes.

Actual cost really depends on which brand of tires. Low end Bontrager stuff (as found on the Trex FX) is actually pretty cheap stuff. You can do a lot better. 700x28 Conti Gatorskins are running about $40-$50/each.

The real questions is why? Going from 700x25s to 700x35s maybe ads 1mph to my overall daily average moving speed. And utterly kills the ride quality and ability to handle anything other than nice pavement.

Shouldn't this be the other way around?

I find the smaller tires make it so you feel the bumps more.

Thats what the poster meant. The more volume in the tire will increase rolling resistance, but increase the compliance of the ride. Lowering the air pressure some increases the effect even more. IMO, unless you're racing, the increased rolling resistance will make you a stronger rider anyway - the plush ride is just a bonus.

Dollar cost could be all over the map, depending on whose tires you buy and what model they are. Do some shopping and see.

About $80 for a pair of Gatorskins imported from your favorite UK supplier or $90-$100 for a pair of GP 4 Seasons.

The Gatorskins last a very long time and still ride nice. The GP4 Seasons are a little better but don't last nearly as long.

They'll be nicer and more flat resistant.
