Mountain Biking - Compatibility of Avid and Shimano brake parts?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Are Avid V-brakes (Single Digit, etc.) compatibel with Shimano (Deore, LX, etc.) levers, and vice versa?

Yes, ALL v-brake systems are fully compatible with each other. I'm using Avid levers with Tektro brakes on one of my bikes as a matter of fact.

Dont listen to him, he just wants you to waste your money.

V-brake systems are NOT interchangable...dont even think of it, you crack your frame.

I'm a newbie and knew that almost anything that had to do with V brakes was compatible

Yeah... I've seen numerous people running LX or XT integrated shifters & levers with Avid SD7 brakes and such. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to mix the two.

I think he was talking about shimano V-brake levers with Avid V-brakes, not discs... same premise, though. They're all mechanically similar, so they should work fine. :)

its exacly the same... just linear pull lines

all V brake levers are pretty much the same...some have more bells and whistles but they all work

Ooooook Ill give it up :D

Any cable-pull brakes are interchangable

Worthwhile noting though that levers from differing manufacturers pull cable at differing mechanical advantage, and differing rates.

When I switched from XTR V-levers to Avid V-levers with my Arch Supremes (essentially a V-brake), the Avids certainly performed better (IMHO). Not sure if it was Avid designing them that way, or just luck?

Djrider knows that they are compatible I haven't the foggiest idea why he was spouting that nonsense.

I think he was bored and just wanted a good laugh. I knew he was kidding.. especially with the "crack your frame" comment. :p
