Ok, this is thefirst time I've ever changed out the drive train on my bike. Now coes the stupid question part...

Do you oil your chain the first time you put it on, or is the stuff that is already on it (SRAM) good enough to use right out of the sealed box?



Now I plan on cleaning it all 1 to 2 times a week, as it all depends on how much I ride.


( I know there are no dumb questions, just stupid people who ask stupid questions. ) ;)

Just clean off the outside of the chain.

The packing grease it comes wiith is a very good lube.

I was thinking it was good enough, but I didn't think of giving it a quick wipe.

I just built up my new Kona about a month ago, and it will be getting its first dose of lube most likely tomorrow. ONE TIME, the chain wanted to be a little sticky, but it's rolling sweet. (Of course, ONE TIME it broke, too, but I always have that in the first 3 weeks with a SRAM 951 chain... then it goes perfectly for the rest of its life, 2+ years)

The stock lubricant is one of the GLEITMO formulations. You're not going to get anything much better than that. I use SRAM PC-1 chains and don't do a thing to them (aside from chopping 'em to length) until they've gotten good and grimey.

Are you changing out the drive TRain? OR just the drive CHain?

By the way, those little power links on SRAM chains are reusable on 9 speed chains but are NOT on 10 speed chains. I spent an hour or so trying to get mine apart, watched all kinds of useful videos on line, no dice.

For the best cleaning possible, remove the chain from the bike (requiring a new power link).

OK a little info...

I found the bike way back in 2010. I had new wheels, tires, bar tape and a seat put on it. I didn't do anything else, as everything else was in good shape ( had a bike shop check it out). Well I noticed the chain was so bad that the rollers would move about an eighth of an inch by themselves. So I decided to change the chain, cassette, and took the crank down to have it checked out. Well come to find out I only needed the chain and cassette. So I spent today changing those out, and cleaning everything else.

So I changed out 2/3 of the drive TRain.

Dang... 2010... that's practically brand new. What is it?

No I found it in 2010, in the middle of the highway. It was the 2006 bike in y signiture.
