I picked this up for $15 but can't find a date code. The only identifying mark is that the cage is stamped ST. I know it is SR but what year?

About 1985, the patent was expired. It is it appears of the last design, so 28 t freewheels are not a big effort. I am about to use mine on the ride home.

That is a 1986-1987 one. 1985 was still dated (with an '11' mark). Same is true for Nuovo Record ones of that vintage.

When did they stop making these? About 1990?

1987.

C-Record debuted in 1985, and NR and SR components stopped by the end of 1987. I suspect that they ran out of unfinished pieces (to complete and sell) by then, but didn't want to scrap anything by stopping sooner than that.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that they developed that outer cage shape not just as a matter of style, but to help push the chain up onto that 28t cog?

I think you're probably right. Their pulley cages were modified and updated through the years in an effort to improve performance.

Yes, but, the NRs will handle 28s.
