I'm going to be racing out there in early April. Anyone familiar with that track - anything I should know about it? Tire recommendations? Etc?

Dude, you should just email me directly, hahaha.

I've raced there a few times. That track is tough on fancy tires. The locals have advised me to leave the thin tubulars at home and use conti sprinters or similar.

You aren't changing tires for every track you visit are you?

Cool I'll just use my gator skins. However I just got a comete rear and will need to find a tubular that will work in frisco, la and Colorado springs.

Man, you are slipping into over-analysis mode.

If you are going to the sprint clinic listed on the calendar, you probably won't need race wheels.

Every sprint clinic I've been to was done on warmup gears or really low gears to level the playing field of the participants. It's about learning technique, not going fast. Because if you are able to push a much bigger gear than your partner for the drills, you won't learn the techniques. You'll just ride away from your partner and neither of you will learn anything.

You may do a couple of full-on flying 200s on race gears. But, in a 1 day clinic, you'll only do a couple...like 1 or 2 max.

So, in short, you may not need aero wheels. Save them for big races. And I'm just gonna throw this out there as a friend...don't be the guy in cat 5 races with a carbon bike and Mavic Io and Comete. It just makes you a target for not-friendly conversation.

TIL there is another "frisco" that is not San Francisco.

Not going for the sprint clinic. Going for the speed race sprint tournament.

Just asking a few questions. Just like everyone else does on this forum. Just asking questions. No big deal.

OK, so you want me to bring the Gios and leave the Dolan at home as to not irritate the elitists Masters racers? Come on man, I'm not there to impress anyone, I am just having fun and I like gear. It's not like anyone there is training for the Olympics. If people have a problem with what I ride in a race, to them I say, "get a life", there is more to life than Masters track racing. I have a life outside of cycling and quite frankly, I don't hang with other cyclists except for a few people. I prefer hanging out with my "general interest" friends. So I feel pretty immune to whatever elitist attitudes that exist in Masters racing. Those guys are the people who are pretty silly if you ask me. And if you judge me because I am riding a bike that I would maybe like to grow into and because I got a killer deal on a race wheel and so I decided to use it, instead of the fact that I am a nice guy who is out there just to have a little fun and enjoy a hobby, then I feel that you have some issues with your own self-esteem. That elitist BS is enough to make me want to go back to trail running, so hopefully I won't find it to be too present this season. I'd hate for that to spoil my experience.

Dude. I'm not attacking you. I was just offering some friendly advice. I'm not judging you. I mean that sincerely.

It's not a Masters thing. Actually the masters will generally have nicer gear than Juniors or Elite. This is because they generally have more money for their hobbies.

I'm not saying use the Gios over the Dolan. Definitely use the Dolan if that's your #1 race bike for this season.

I'm talking about using the fancy wheels for a clinic.

Ever see the guy with the monopod holding up the 80-200mm lens? Or the guy with the EOS 1Ds with 3 prime lenses shooting his kids birthday party at Chuck E Cheese?...when he has a nice P&S in his bag. Sort of overkill, right?

Again, I'm just offering some friendly advice :) Ride what you want, man.

I thought the Frisco Velodrome was closed for lack of $$ a few years ago. I guess they got it opened up again. Nice to know!

I thought that the racing in Frisco was like some of the TT and sprint events in CO where everyone is mixed together. Turns out it's categorized. So no, I won't be using my racing wheels since I'll be with the Cat 4's.

But in LA I'll be racing a 200, Kilo and team sprint and am told I should bring the wheel to that.

People need to either write out the full name of the place they are going to or the name of the facility. This could be either Los Angeles or Louisiana.

Just got back from TX and had a great time. New bike and first time on a 250 track (and just being a beginner in general) was distracting, but it was fun. I think I got a good starting 200 for the season, hopefully I'll only get faster. My 200 time was a 12.3. Hopefully that will be the slowest time I will get this year as I get more experienced and stronger. I'm told I spent most of my time outside the red line, which will help a lot moving forward. Also I know that I was not "digging" deep as I rode, as I had too many things that I was thinking about.

The sprints really showed my weakness from an experience standpoint. the 12.3 was the 5th fastest time among the 24 people who were there, which was great, but I quickly realized that that meant I'd be matched up against some pretty good sprinters. The first one was pretty ugly and I jumped way too early. The second one I was focusing on not jumping too early, that I jumped too late. Actually, I got jumped. I was eventually matched up against the guy who beat me the first time and he tried to pin me up in a track stand - he was a pretty skilled rider, and he knew it - but I took advantage of the situation and knowing I have pretty good standing power, I sprinted out of it with 2.5 laps to go, which was the same mistake I made the first time against the same guy, but this time he couldn't catch me and I won.

So I ended it on a good note and came home happy.

Good time, very fun track. Hope to get out to Frisco again.

Sorry for the long race report. That's how I do sometimes! Oh and no one seemed to care that I was riding a carbon fiber bike! But I left my race wheel at home. :-)

Los Angeles.

Well, there's two tracks out there...Encino and HDC. Assuming HDC, if you haven't raced or ridden there before, you want clean tires with traction. Very slippery at low speeds.

It was HDC. Had grippy tires. All was well.

Did they ever post the results from that event? I can't find them on the website.
