Hey Man I thought about putting this in your PM but I figured maybe other people would like your opinion as well. I got a quote from MY bike shop for a Surly Instigator. It comes with a Marzocchi z1 drop off II, Full LX, XT wheel set and Avid Mech Disc's. He quoted me 1677.88 with tax and build up out the door. He also said they will work with me in that I can start putting money down and when I get enough down they will order it and build it up for me. How do all these componets sound, along with the price? The surly a tough ass frame? How is the geometry, again I'll be buying sight unseen. He said it was more of a XC set up than the Morphine which was more FR. He also could build up the Morphine (higher price) but it was pretty much overkill for everything I wanted. He said the Surly would work perfectly.

Sounds like he has the right idea. I don't know much about Surly bikes. Geometry or otherwise. Did you check the site for the numbers?

Yeah I did. It looks pretty good, the 18in seems to fit perfect, it might be a TAD to small, as I'm riding a GF 19.5 right now but I think the TAD smallness but be welcome if I go down some urban or any freeriding. Im so excited, I don't think many people have this bike and I can start puttin money down and I will feel better than just shelling out the total 1677 at once. As soon as I get some xmas money I'm going in there and putting some cash down! I love my LBS, I dunno why I didn't go there first.

I can't help you with the components or price but the frame isn't going to break on you anytime soon unless your riding off cliffs or off houses.

Maybe you can pick me up on the way to canada... only if you're going when it's warm there, though.

Hahaha what exactly do you consider warm. I recently was wearing jeans and a tshirt and it was 0 degree c (32f) :D

you're insane.. 32 degrees and I'm wearing a sweater, jeans, and a jacket.. if I'm going riding, I'll wear a wicking layer under the sweater and jacket.. along with thick gloves.. and booties over my shoes. Oh, and I can't forget the balaclava. :p

If I get used to it, when it actually gets cold...I end up having to layer too much. I would rather be used to it.

I'm in TN and we regularly have sub-30 overnight temps during December & January. I get off work @ 3am usually so I'm always riding in the coldest weather of the day. It's supposed to get down around 14 degrees here Friday night and 16 on Saturday night. :(

back on topic, I think that Surly sounds like a great bike for the price. I say go for it (looks like you already have). That's pretty cool that the bike shop is letting you do a "layaway" of sorts on a custom build.
