Dos anyone ride one of these? I know most SS mountain bikes are set up as XC rigs, but I wanted to make one thats more dual slalom style. Any frame recommendations or thoughts on such a project?

theres plenty of frames out there with horiz. drops and derailleur hangers so you can do either. sputnik, azonic, evil, on-one are just a few of the companies making frames for what you want to do.

fetish has two frames in that league. One is closer to XC but the other is a straight jumper.

The fetish frames are dirt cheap on Ebay. Go to www.fetishcycles.com to view the options. I recently got a Fixation SS for $184 shipped to my door, well.... in theory. Hasn't shown up yet, just bought it yesterday. I can't remember the dirt jumper model name. But search for that on Ebay. Kingcycles sells them on Ebay. I also have a fetish road frame and feel it is as good as any alu/carbon stayed bike in its weight class. 3.4 lbs. Isn't the fanciest. I've also seen some Surly instigators on Ebay recently that appeared to be cheap. DO NOT BUY from anyone who doesn't have scads of postive feedback! at least 40 or 50. There's been reports of scamming going on over bikes on Ebay. I got screwed myself on a Giant VT deal.

you can run verticals as long as you have a chain tentioner

Chain tensioners suck. They're no excuse for a SS.

Your bike does not have a ternsioner, therefore it is not a lame excuse for a SS. That is good.

A tensioner is still a lame excuse for a SS.

Um, I don't mean to turn this into a singulator-bashing thread but... what's wrong with people using a tensioner if they are just getting into SS? It's an easy way to figure out if you're into the whole SS thing before commiting to horizontals.

Nothing wrong with it. Some people just get their panties in a knot if it isn't as clean as it possible can be. Tensioners remove from the 'cleanness' of a ss.

I run a Transition Trail or park. Thing is a beast. Right now I don't have a dedicated SS hub or spacers so I am using a deraileur as a tensioner until I find the time to put cog with some spacers on my hub. I am also kind of picky (making it hard to find the right gearing) cause I want my hub in the smallest chainstay setting.
