I just ordered an avid front brake, but it came with the wrong adaptor. Are the calipers front and rear specific? Or can I just order a new avid adaptor. Or better yet, can I use a hayes adaptor?

yes there are front and rear specific... but im not so sure about any differences there are

IM pretty sure a hayes will work. As long as it is specific for the front and works for the 74 to 51mm your set. I notice on my avid for the front it has a few washers as spacing so you may need to get ahold of washers. Im not positive about this though

This is also 2002 brake (got it new but closeout I guess)

Also, looking @ my avid in front, and my brake in the rear as far as i can tell, the adapters are indeed different.

nope, the calipers are not front/rear specific. you just use whatever adapter you need for whatever frame/fork you have. they likely sent you a rear kit. only real difference is that it comes with the rear adapter instead of the front.
at least one of the hayes will work. i've used a hayes front IS 160mm mount with my front avids in the past (was in a hurry, and it was all i could find locally) and it worked. not sure what others may or may not work, depending on what rotor size you are using; i don't think any of there other ones will work. the avids are cheaper, but i can't tell a difference functionally. in fact, i think that hayes mount is still in use on the front of my SS.
FYI: you can also use a 140mm rotor from hope or formula on the rear with avids, if you use the FRONT adapter in the rear. it's weird, but it works. doing it on my XC SS, and it works fine.

There are 4 fork mounts and 1 rear mount for hayes...so the back is a no brainer but for the front I had 4 choices and yes, I screwed it up :D LBS helped me out.

My LBS sent me the wrong adaptor. The brake is for a dj I am building for my gf. I use hydros :)..
