Foo - argh.. anyone NOT have gmail?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Good lord.. gmail keeps giving me invites like crazy... needless to say, I have 6 more invites. So yeah, anyone who wants/needs one, post here and I'll get you one ASAP. :)
Same here. They just gave me 10 invites. Sorry cryogenic, but I'm piggybacking off your thread.
Invites require a name and email address (if you don't know that already).

dunno if you've gotten one yet, but I went ahead and sent you an invite
Dang it, I've got 6, too. Someone PLEASE send me a PM! (posting name and email in the thread is a sure-fire way to get spam - there are bots crawling the net looking for addresses).

I think the other reason people don't want gmail is that google scans your gmail for keywords, then sells your email address to advertisers that market in those areas. So if you send a lot of emails about bicycling, you will start receiving bicycle spam.
But they are very good at keeping the spam in the spam email box. You never see it.
I've got 10 invites myself. Send me A PM. If you respond on this thread, I most likely will not invite, since so many people who have gmail will send you an invite that it will go wasted.

Thats me. Besides my 250meg hotmail account works fine. My yahoo account is great for signing up for spam and I have like 5 others corporate. I really don't need another haha

Heh, I'm tempted to start my own, but if I do I'm going to do the true geek thing, and use a microdrive, a single-board pc, and aim to make it the size of an ipod. Reason is, those ultra compact single board units can use wall-wart power supplies, and use very little power at all...so it wouldnt make my power bill significantly higher.

So what if you have heaps of invites? It doesn't mean you HAVE to use them.

Got a handful of invites myself, but didn't use any of 'em. I pay for hosting and so I've got my own mail server already. A gmail account would be redundant.

gmail doesn't send your email address to anyone.. they do scan your email for keywords and then display advertisements based on the text found in your emails. However, your email address remains private. I have yet to get a single piece of unsolicited spam email in my gmail account.

Heh....maybe a gmail account wouldn't be redundant after all. I am a pretty crappy admin.

Check the Spam folder in your account. Gmail is very good at screening the spam out of your main inbox and putting it in the Spam folder. I've never found a legitiate email in the Spam folder, and have never found a spam email in the main folder.

That's my exact point.. my spam folder has never seen an email since I've had my account. If you read their terms of service, they don't use or sell your email, however they do scan your email text and subject lines for keywords and display ads based on those keywords. They don't give your email away so you can be freely spammed, though.

Whats so good about gmail anymore? hotmail already updated their free email sorage capacity by like 100 times and that was the main feature thay made gmail so great wasnt it, the fact that you could store all of your emails. hotmail also increased the maximum attachment size you can
send so im sticking with hotmail.

If you want I can forward my hotmail spam to you. Their filters don't work for me.

I don't have it. And, honestly, I don't want it. I cannot fathom why (or how?!) anyone could justify 2GB of mail (my ISP recently switched my mailbox to this size but I'm lucky if I'm at 1MB). Additionally, while Gmail doesn't sell your addy I don't feel comfortable about the "snooping" into my mail and the attachments (yes, it does scan the attachments) just so the server can show ads that I might like. It's bad enough that I get swamped with ads online (thank gawd for adblock and mozilla) and elsewhere (doesn't anyone feel overbombarded at times with information??!?), I don't need more in my mail.
Anyways, 'tis my rant.

Anyways, 'tis my rant. You honestly shouldn't send/recieve messages that you wouldn't want aired on a public mail server. Heck nothing on the internet is totally secure anyway, much less email. There's always someone that can access it.

Heh.. I know this all too well. But I don't need to open up a further can of worms by putting myself into a greater position. I still remember a time when the Internet was appaulled at the thought of business (and ads) coming online. Heck, it was scareligious (sp?).
And while anyone might be able to access it, if I make it harder for them they are less likely to do so. If I make it easier they are more likely to do so.

Not only do I not have it, I'm not even sure what it is. I'm assuming it's a server, like ...@gmail.com or something like that. I don't know, sbc yahoo works for me!!

Yep, email is like a postcard. Encryption is an envelope. PGP is my preferred encryption system, however I have been known to use 3-DES for casual encryption as well.

I still have 18. send me a message at diggerbunny AT gmail.com and I will reply with an invite. Neat and clean.
By the way, I dont know why everyones having fits about gmail text-scanning emails for some rather benign targeted advertising. after all, ITS EXACTLY THE SAME service that scans your posts here at bikeforums for those targeted ads inbetween posts. six of one, half dozen of the other.
If you want I can forward my hotmail spam to you. Their filters don't work for me.
I actually don't get too much Spam on hotmail anymore. I think I have just outwaited all the spammers, and they have grown tired of sending it to me.
And no one's spam filter has ever worked effectively. I have a filter for viagra, v!agra, vi agra, and v_i_a_g_r_a and they still get email through with all sorts of variations.
