I'm going on a family vacation to Puerto Aventuras, Mexico next week, and at the last minute I am considering bringing my old hardtail bike or renting one there. It's about 1 hour from Cancun. Has anybody taken a bike there? Is it a nice area to go for a ride? Any help is appreciated.

The coast road from Cancun south to Tulum is a big divided highway with lots of traffic. However, there was a good paved shoulder, so the cycling wasn't too scary or that unpleasant. I don't have a map in front of me, and I don't know precisely where Puerto Aventuras is on the coast. Here are a couple of cycling possibilities:
The ride around Cozumel was fairly nice and an easy day trip. Also, we headed inland from Tulum, and the ride from there to Coba was pleasant, with minimal traffic compared to the coastal road, and mostly riding through vegetation.
One thing to know is that it's very easy to throw your bike on most buses in Mexico. We flew in and out of Merida, and took a bus from somewhere south of Merida (near Uxmal) across the Yucatan to Playa del Carmen, and biked back to Merida.

I'm on my way down to Cozumel and the area on the mainland on st. Paddy's Day. I'm thinking of taking my new Ritchey BAB and riding road down there, pretty much daily, for as much distance as possible. That all between some reef diving. Have you learned anything more about the area?? My other option is to rent a local hardtail and go everyhere. I hear they are reasonable prices if compared in US dollars.
Any advice or comments would be welcome for me as well.

Tom, the area is flat and well-paved, so good for road riding in that sense. The major highway is high-speed (~60 mph) but has a wide shoulder and saw some people riding bikes on it. The smaller paved country roads have little traffic, but they are narrow.
I would have much preferred bringing my own bike there. Most of the ones available were really low quality, equivalent to Huffy or something.
The people are friendly and it is a fun area to explore. I doubt there's a real good bike shop around, maybe in Cancun though. I think it'll be a good area for road riding if you're comfortable with high-speed roads.
