Fifty Plus (50+) - Gonna be 60 this year. Anybody else hitting that milestone ??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Can't believe I'll be 60 years old this year !! And still riding this crazy bike. Any one else as thankful as I am for even being able to ride at all at this "advanced age" ??? Oh and, since this is a special year I treated myself to new wheels and tires. :D

Funny thing about getting Older--Experience tells you that N+1 (Or two in the case of 10 wheels) Has to be something a bit special.

I'm not there yet...57 now, 58 this coming September. Had a nice long ride today, 53+ miles, with an 18.8 average speed (it's very flat down here in South Florida)...I plan to be riding to and from work until I'm 70. Then I plan to do a coast to coast ride if I'm able...and I plan to be able. A friend of mine, years ago was in his 70's and riding a bike. I asked him how he did it, he said," ride every day in your 50's and 60's if you want to ride in your 70's." I'm trying hard to follow that advice.

18 months past 60, but living in a NYC apt. Maxes us out at 2 bikes each.
Passed that milestone in January. I have, since the age of 30, been thankful for each day that I can participate in any of the things I love.
Us old folk have some pretty nice rides ... huh !!??

I'm going to turn 59 this year. I can't believe it. That's just crazy.
I'd enjoy a new bike, but the one I want isn't made yet. Something like a Volagi, but with low, but close ratio gears and electronic D2I shifting.
That may never get made, so in the meantime I want to ride the snot out of the one I have. I can hear the clock ticking.

I turn 60 this year.
To be honest, it bothers me a bit. I keep getting asked when I intend to retire, I guess because 2011 changed my brown/grey hair ration from 60/40 to about 30/70.
I'm also more aware of my mortality as I often see folks younger than me showing up in the obits.
Then again, I'm on track to have my best cycling year evar, I have four beautiful grandchildren, and the family is doing really well. I really have everything I could possibly want, except a well-funded pension plan.

I am just about the same age as you. I have four road bikes and a mountain bike; my wife has two mountain bikes.

Hit that mark about a year and a half ago. Tell the truth I'm in better physical shape than I've been in 15 years and mentally, never better.
My 60th birthday, nearly 3 years ago, was the first one that bothered me. I could not get my mind wrapped around the fact that I was 60, which seemed to me at the time as 'old'. When I was a kid, a 60 year old person seemed ancient and decrepit. Now that I am on the cusp of my 63rd birthday, I have a renewed sense of 'I do not feel nearly as old as I thought I would'.
Anyway, I am shopping for a new set of wheels for my Cannondale Synapse.

Ride in your 70's? Simple. Put your leg over the seat and pedal away. Why would it be different than 60's?

But I don't think much of the modern stuff- too exotic- too expensive- when people are losing their personal auto transportation- our activity is waaay too expensive, and so the turkeys keep riding a bike from World War Two
i was just thinking this morning- more than forty years around bicycles and for most of these people, it's like none of it ever happened! :o

Boy, is that a fact. On one hand, it is very disconcerting ... on the other hand, it makes me so very thankful for my good health, and the ability to be able to ride and play tennis.

I'm turning 62 this year. Turning 60 was hard. I think I'm still in denial about it. So maybe I'll go back to my previous birthday system. Right now, Forty Twenty One.

I hit 60 this year. I am still trying to figure out what kind of riding i wan to do. It is narrowed down to road. touring or long-distance (Randonneuring)
Still getting stuff for each choice lights, racks and clothing for touring. Trash can panniers for the hybrid and lights. Road bike an Air-zound
Three road bikes 60 & 62 cm Mercier Corvus and a Trek 1420. Touring is a 64 cm Gran Turismo. For rando I haven't figured that one out. The road is not tough enough or handle well enough at my weight for the chip-seal and the Turismo is too heavy and stiff without an extra 40 lbs on it.
Someone out there will tell me i need a 'bent
I turned 65 in October and retired for the second, and last time, the same month. It's great to have everyday feel like a Saturday. You'll love it and your rides will be longer and more often. This is my retirement present to myself. Brought it home on January 31st and already have over 1,000 miles on it.

James...you need a BENT. I commute on mine (Bacchetta Strada) and ride it for longer rides too. I'm planning to get another one in a year or two, strictly for touring and long rides. Looking at a Rans Stratus XL and a Tour Easy, don't know just yet which way to go, but I have time. I have ridden 'bents and I have ridden diamond frames, bent are better. Perhaps a bit harder to ride, but much more efficient and faster....way faster....

Sweet bike. I hit 60 last year and got a set of Specialized Roubaix and Ruby bikes for my wife and I. Did a 130mi ride shortly after my birthday which I could never have done with my mtn bike. I'm still a clyde but will continue working on that this summer after the snow is gone.... Wish I'd discovered road bikes years ago. Never thought it would make a big difference...wrong!

" "advanced age" ???" 60 years old is hardly advanced age in today's world--Actually there is no advanced age when one is riding a bike because it keeps you young.

My 73rd birthday is in 8 days (March 26), and I celebrated early last week by giving myself a new Giant Cypress 21-speed to replace my 1980 Huffy (regeared) 12-speed. Rode 14 miles today in northern Indiana, aiming for the 20-mile mark that I hit last November on the Huffy before switching to inside-the-mall winter walking. I took up riding again last year after a 20-year layoff and 50 years of sitting behind a desk.

Turned 60 last summer. Finally fulfilled a childhood dream ... to walk on the Appian Way. Have wanted to do that since I was about nine years old. It was a very emotional experience. I couldn't help wondering, as I was caressing one of the basaltic paving stones, what the slave who was laying that stone could have ever thought that someone 2,300 years later would be thinking about him. Rented a bike in Rome and rode out to the end of the preserved section of Via Appia Antica. The next day, I rode in the opposite direction to visit Ostia Antica. Cool place ... better than Pompeii.

I was at Ostia Antica some 20+ years ago when I was working in Rome for a few weeks....I remember walking along running my hands on the stonework of the buildings and being blown away by the ceramic tile work that was still visible! I couldn't stop running my hands over the stones of the buildings, in awe that something built by a man could stand so long and survive! It is a real eye opener, a moment that I still recall to this day....
Thanks for the good memory!!!!
