Classic & Vintage - 3 questions on what to expect 77 Le Tour II upgrades

I have a 1977 Schwinn Le Tour II, last year after about 80 miles in to a 119 mile ride I came to a 10% grade pass that climbed around 7 miles. I ended up walking my bike about half of the way up and this year I do not want to repeat that debacle.

I changed out my wheelset to 700C rear, 650w front, both with 23x700 tires(taken from an Ironman Master.) I swapped the RD out with a Shimano 105 however the FD is stock Schwinn Le Tour.

when in my climbing gears the chain does not line up at all so I am hoping there is room to add this triple to the front.

Thanks to BF member notenoughdaylig, I got a BB for the cost of shipping. the Crank is a 172.5 mm 6603 Ultegra.

1. What kind of problems do you think I am going to run in to?
2. Will I need a long cage rear derailuer?
3. Will I need a different front derailuer?

I own the same bike (same year and size).

You'll need a triple FD, and this will be a pain to install since modern FDs don't come with the integrated housing stop. I ended up installing some 105 DT shifters and repurposing the existing DT housing stop by moving it underneath the new 105 derailleur. You might opt to simply route the shift cable underneath the BB, but that caused issues for me with it sliding back and forth when the cable slacks (paint chips also happened). Since you're replacing the BB, you can drill & tap a screwhole in the shell to mount a cable guide and fix the problem entirely.

You shouldn't need a long-cage RD. That's mostly dependent on the largest sprocket, but if the largest chainring on the new crank is much larger than the old one, then you might need it to handle the chainwrap.

I believe it's 28.6mm.

Also, I was wrong about the chainwrap issue, because the problem is the opposite of what I described. The granny gear on the triple will leave a lot of chain hanging, so you can either get a longcage RD or ignore the problem and don't cross-chain when in the granny.

Could I just file a groove in the BB and let the cable slide through that excluding the cable housing where it ends on the downtube?

Yeah you can do that. I'd worry about rust though. Some people just use a short run of cable housing and epoxy it to the shell. The FD cable isn't usually under strong tension.
