Humans have developed the ability to send man to the moon ... and bring them back safely. They can probe the deepest depths of the ocean basins and cure most diseases that plague the surface of the earth.

Why can't the powers-to-be make a cycling water bottle that doesn't leak?

I have some camel baks and they are terrific. Just the other day I was marveling at the fact that the valve was open in my gear bag and not a drop!

Ditto on their Podium Chill. It's my bottle of choice now, after years and years of everything from basic bottles to Polars. I even had a Columbus tubing logo'd bottle with the kind of pop-off cap shown in Snydermann's photo. I'd forgotten all about it. That really takes me back.

I use their "Big Chill" bottles because in the summer here, you need both the insulation (it really helps) and the extra volume. My only issue with them is they are bit expensive to toss to the side of the road in a long race, and a bit big for the jersey pocket when I need three bottles.

And here I thought that all water bottles were the same. Boy, am I dumb. I'll hunt around and get some "real" bottles. Thanks for the tips guys.

The cheapo bottles work fine for me. Where are your bottles leaking?

Cheapo bottles are great for everyday riding. I get at least one of them every time I do a charity ride and now have a bunch of spares. However, on long distance rides, I like to use my Polar bottles as they keep the water and electrolytes cooler longer.

Only bottles I have had leak were the "FREE" ones given out at events. But I don't pay a fortune my mine either. Just ordinary Plastic bottles that catch my eye in the shops. Must have at least 20 now.

CamelBack Podium don't leak and they have a valve to place them on shut. I do this while transporting

You get what you pay for. Inexpensive bottles leak and higher priced ones generally do not. Most of these are made by Specialized and are sold with other companies logos. When you are looking for bottles, look at the bottom and you will see Specialized's name imprinted.

Mt Camelbak bottle doesn't leak.

I have often accidentally (a) forgotten to turn the lock thingy so it can't leak, and (b) left it in the bottle cage, upside down, in my car. Not a drop.

The Camelbak bottles are good for squirting dogs, too. I can hold them pointed downward, and no water comes out until I squeeze when the dog is in range. (It works on some dogs...)

Ditto. I use the cheapo bottles to take to the gym and the pool. I use Polar bottles for riding, and the color must match the bike.

I also use the cheapo bottles for the first throwaway/exchange on the bike leg of the triathlons.

I've probably had 50 water bottles, and I don't remember that ANY of them leaked.
But matching bottle color to bike color is just...embarrassing.

I also like the Camelback bottles. I use them all the time - not just on my bike, but at home. But after a couple years and daily use, mine have started leaking between cap and top of bottle when they're squeezed. Nothing lasts forever, I guess.

I use the polar bottles as well, they are NOT colour coordinated to the bike, but to the contents. The now elderly white one with pink label is my wife's, just water in that one, the green one gets just water, the black one gets the "enhanced" water. Well that WAS the way I did it. Someone stepped on the black one and crushed it, so it is no more.:notamused:

A bottle that you have to unscrew the cap to get the contents out.

Had a few Specialized bottles that shattered when 'squoze'.. then
I got some Sigg sports drink bottles.. diam a bit small..
[they have their own cages if you can find them (SJS, occasionally,) ]
but cap design vents air in OK .. to let the water out..

in the local box shop I see a wider mouth version now, still Swiss aluminum
with a food grade coating inside ...

If you put Nuun electrolyte fizzy tabs in your bottle, it will leak. Or explode.

Explode ? How many are you putting in the bottle ? I suppose you could do the same thing with Mentos and coke.

I've been using the Specialized bottles for a while and I've never had a leaking problem. As for the Nuun's, wait a couple of minutes before you put the tops back or make sure you let the gas out before you put the bottle in the cage.

I use the freebies and have not had a problem. What is happening to the bottle when the leak occurs? The current ones are 2 Trek and 2 Cannondale the shops geve us when we got our bicycles.

Thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions. I put into the shopping cart two Polar bottles, then before submitting the order, decided to check the Camelbak bottles. The Camelbak bottles have better reviews, so I ordered two of the Big Chill Camelbak Podium Big Chill 25 oz. bottles. Thanks again.

The ones that leak the worst are my two 24 oz. Bontrager bottles. When I use them, I get more water on the front of my shirt than in my mouth. They are absolutely awful. They are the ones with the snap-on top. The inexpensive screw on top bottless are better, but they still leak if I'm not careful.

Wow.

I buy the 4-packs of 20-oz Gatorade, and get a couple months' use out of each bottle; $3.75 for 4, with the Gatorade already in it. Since my kids like Gato, I have spares all the time. AND, they fit the standard cage.

Not only do I use them for rides, but for hydration over the course of the evening -- 2 bottles at a time, refill 'em at least 1x/night.

You will like the Camelback bottles. They don't leak, even when in the 'open' position. When you do squeeze them, plenty of water comes out, better than most other bottles. Also there is nothing to twist or pull up, just squeeze the bottle, drink and put it back in the cage. In my opinion they are perfect.

Generally there are two types of bottles. Generally. The old style has a snap-on lid, the current style has a large-mouth screw-on lid. The old ones were prone to leaking, and you could only fit small ice cubes into them. The current ones don't leak for the most part, and you can put real ice cubes into them.

I've still got a few of the old style left. Sometimes companies that know nothing about bottles will give away the old style (I guess they'd be cheaper as well). I take the old style with me when I travel. They get heaved on the last ride (Tour de France style) at wherever I am, so when I pack the bike for the return leg, I've got one or two fewer bottles, so a bit more space to carry whatever I've acquired.

So if you see an old style bottle marked "BCAA" (British Columbia Automobile Association) on the side of the road near Kona, Hawaii, well, that was mine... (And if you're Hawaiian Law Enforcement, well, it must have shaken loose from the cage, honest!)
