Fifty Plus (50+) - food for thought

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Last week was the NYC half marathon. The winner did it in slightly less than an hour or 13MPH.A full 26 mile marathon in about 12.8MPH.I, with considerable exertion (not killing myself but no slacking)can do a 40 mile bike ride in about 14.5-15MPH.Often if against a wind or a little hilly in less than 13MPH.
Greg Lemond in the 80s did his TT route for the TDF in a record breaking 34MPH.
Secretariat ran the Belmont in record breaking time that still stands in 1973 at 37MPH.Not trying to say anything beyond I'm slow as s--t and giving some perspective.

What amazes me is: I, at 58, on my bicycle, expending leisurely effort, that can easily beat any distance runner in the world in a race.

I was a 3 hour marathon runner 40 years ago--If I tried it now it would be a lot longer---That is if I got past the 5 mile mark without calling the SAG wagon.

When I first started commuting, it freaked me out when I realized I often wasn't going as fast as a good miler. Fortunately that's no longer the case.

To think the fastest of the fastest bikers can ride on flats as fast as the fastest race horses!

I broke 3 1/2 hrs once and I was pretty proud of that. Today I imagine it would take me about 3 1/2 days.
