Southern California - Ready to start taking the San Diego-Coronado ferry

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

First time I've posted here in the regional discussions. Hopefully some of you will know the places I'm talking about.

I just got my box of bike goodies in the mail today, and after installing the new saddle, headlight and taillight I think my old Peugeot is ready.

I used the bike to commute occasionally up the Silver Strand bike path from Imperial Beach to Coronado - work was about a 9 mile ride from my last residence, but it was almost always windy next to the ocean and either too cold or too hot, so I usually just took the car.

After buying a house and getting settled in, and starting to pay attention to how much I was actually spending every month on gas, I wanted to start riding down to the (free) commuter ferry in downtown San Diego, but I had my bike set up with only a front brake, and there are a lot of hills between City Heights and there. It's 6.5 miles to the ferry and another 3 or 4 once I get off. The singlespeed setup and fairly steep gearing will either make me more of a man, or will make me walk up a few hills :D

Anyone else here taking this ferry on a regular basis?

I ride the Coronado-San Diego ferry many times a month and always have my bike with me. I always have to pay $4.75 EACH way. I ride all three ferries from San Diego - Convention Center, Marriott Harbor, Broadway pier. I've asked about the fare for a bike and it is always $4.75. When I board on Coronado Island they always tell me I must have a $4.75 ticket.

Am I missing the free ferry somewhere?

Hope this helps.

I thought the ferry service was completely abandoned when the bridge was built.

On a weekend trip to San Diego a while back, I started north of the airport, and did a loop around to Coronado - taking the ferry back. A nice ride. I, too, didn't know about the free option; but it was worth whatever I paid.

I didn't know there was a free option either but that's a great idea (probably for promoting cycling or walking in order to keep traffic off the bridge, island or downtown during commuter hours, but just a guess). Wish I could help but I've only traveled that ferry to get from Coronado to downtown or Seaport and then back.

That is quite a commute you have going if I remember the area correctly. Used to live there. Hope someone can help you.

AH! - morning riding

I am seldom done drinking the required 3 cups of coffee in the morning by 8:40 AM - nothing in my world starts until after 9 AM so I guess I'll have to keep paying to ride the ferry

I have a coffee cup holder on my handlebars, found it at Target I believe. It does tend to spill to varying degrees based on the type of cup and the bumpiness of the surface you're riding on, though. Besides, I usually just have one cup before I leave home in the morning.
