The LBS has a used but in good condition spring rock shocks fork with locking and tension adjustments. They want $80 fitted for it. Its better than the cheap stock fork on my bike. How good are these forks?

Rock Shox Tora Rs. The web puts them at between $150-200 new. The overall ratings seem to be 'good bang for your buck on a budget". Given I paid a whole $260 for the bikes slightly used and its new price is around $400 I think $80 fitted seems to be reasonable. They are way more adjustable and have more travel than the ones I have. It also seems pointless to spend more on a fork than I paid for the whole bike.

I think that's a Tora with a pretty crappy damping system, but it's a good (if heavy) chassis, and you may be able to retrofit it with some different internals down the line if you so choose. For 80 bucks you won't do any better if you must have a suspension fork. It's serviceable and has a functioning lockout, at least.

Thanks. As for weight I don't care. I'm cycling for fitness/weight loss so heavier is actually better in terms of energy spent. I doubt its any heavier than the one on the bike anyway... :)

Very possible. The stock forks on entry level bikes can be super heavy. I took off a 130mm RST Launch and put on a 160mm RS Domain that I thought was going to be crazy heavy, and actually dropped weight.
I don't know if heavier is better for fitness/weight loss though, since you could just ride the lighter bike faster. I'd say it's a wash.
