Looks like the Red Hook crit got some ink from the mainstream cycling press. I'm curious what people's thoughts are on track-bike racing on asphalt.

Wait. You send him to 178 (SSFG) then closed his thread over there?

I was expecting a bunch of dudes wearing skinny jeans and some gaudy sneakers on those pictures.

at least the hipster community can race now.

No, I didn't close that. I closed the one in road.

If everyone is riding fixed on a closed course, why not?
Hopefully the organizer wouldn't put any tight corners in that would result in a clipped pedal though...

Edit: I wouldn't ever do it though. Too dangerous for my taste. I'll keep my track bike on the track.

Pffft...

My favorite paragraph:

Trimble believes the event will benefit from more serious racers attending. “It’s true, there are alley-cat [racers] who used to be competitive who can’t hang anymore,” he said. “They should train more if they feel left out.”

the winners from the first few years all went on to be pros (domestic, I believe).

If you look at the competitors, not exactly "street hipsters". Pros, Cat 1's, Cat 2's....

a good prize list, yes. first place is like 500 and a bike. this is a real deal race that has guys fly in from all over. I'd have done it, but it was closed before I new registration opened.

Too bad. Maybe you could have beaten all of my girlfriend's ex-boyfriends.

we actually talked some about this yesterday at Bethel. It' conceivable I could be the fittest guy at a race like this and still get killed due to gear selection or cornering. it's kinda a crap shoot when you enter a specialist's race like this.

The article mentions that registration for the 100 rider field was filled after only 15 minutes. Crazy.

Also, it was cool to see a woman finish 9th overall on the lead lap.

aside from harlem being an NRC P1 race this is the single most prestigious race in the five boroughs.

usually, they appropriate stuff of others, try to make it their own, and discard it when it becomes too "popular." I guess it's good to see that they are actually exhibiting some creativity for once, you know, ironic because most of them are the creative types.

PS. hipsters don't stand a chance racing against the people in that field.

i take that to be ironic

i think he's serious...

theres some very high caliber riders in the red hook.

after the first couple laps, im sure that the front of an event like that has only very experienced, very fit racers.

edit: i should add that i know nothing about racing on the east coast, or anything outside of socal and norcal

not even a wee bit. try and name one that gets more press or has a bigger prize list (again, aside from Harlem). hint: you can't.

well, recognition, sure, but quality, i think Mengoni should be up there. Certainly, the field is pretty much the same between Red Hook and Mengoni

OK, I'm game to try this. What do I have to do? I haven't had a racing license since about 1982. If I need one, I'll get one. Do I have to be better than a Cat 5?

Tell me more.

Just make sure you register when it opens in early March. Only 100 spots and they go fast.

Have a track bike, you're going to be riding with 99 other people who have track bikes. Be aware this means: high bottom brackets, short wheel bases, aggressive geometry, no brakes and probably shorter cranks. Figure out what gearing you will be comfortable using, the recommend gearing is generally 49x15, three time winner Dan Chabanov used 48x14.

Research the course, there are anywhere from 5-8 turns in the very technical circuit. Understand how to ride this type of race brakeless, I recommend practicing in a neighborhood that has a similar layout.

Be comfortable riding in a pack, try to find some other fixed riders to ride with since the speed moderation by a brakeless peloton is very different than a road peloton. Learn as much as you can about how to (what is essentially) road race a fixed gear. It's a lot different than a geared bike and there's a real lack of information out there. This thread has some good tips:http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/813470-Fixed-for-road-training-what-s-holding-me-back

The race is unsanctioned and open to pretty much everyone, but be aware that when you get lapped, you're pulled from the race. This can happen pretty quickly. The previous winners were/are now, pro cross racers, pro roadies and very strong track racers.

Hipster hate makes me wish I really were a hipster. I would be that much more justified in disliking people who need to poop on someone else's good time. I can't say I especially want to do this race, though. It sounds like a fast ticket to ouchie town. I'll keep the track bike on the track! Though this would be fun to watch sometime.

I'd rather race it while adopting NONE of the hipster stereotypes at all, just not to fit in, wearing a skinsuit. Everyone likes to poop on someone else's good time every so often, like blocking the swerving traffic guy passing as he comes up from behind, or farting as you walk past a smoker
