I will try and look out for it. However, I tend to ignore everyone while riding. Yes, I'm just not that friendly. Except for on the weekends :p
Regarding the wind yesterday: Was I ever wrong. I head north and then west. Not some idiotic NW route. The west bound streets had me wishing I had purchased a bike with drop bars instead of my hybrid. They appear a bit easier to reduce your profile with. Anyhow, that will be my next bike purchase sometime in a the next 2 years.
The fun part was when I hit thornton. I travel Eastbound on 120th. The easiest and fastest ride I have ever had with that tailwind. I'm sure it calmed down from the morning into the evening. It would have been interesting if I had that same wind for my tailwind. :)

Thought I'd give you guys a visual image of the bike except it had ksyriums on it when it was taken. One more little point. We found out that he took off the titanium water bottle holder and added this big old klunky thing that will hold something frozen. So, in essence, if you see a high end Merlin, ridden by a tall Hispanic guy with a frozen drink holder on it....something's gotta be up.

Was the Merlin at the Performance Bike on Colorado Blvd? That's not too far from where I live. Maybe the guy took it the closest bike shop he could find, so he could be in my neighborhood. I will keep an extra sharp eye out when I go to work.

Yep, that's the one. We figure he either lives around there or works around there. Thanks for keeping an eye out. Anyone that see's the bike can call Lt. Zimmer at the Denver PD.

OK - it is 70F in Parker today and glorious. Went out at 2:30, got back at 5:00 pm, just as it was turning dark.
Great ride, met my friend, the 73 yo "Bikini Man" who was stopeed to fix a flat from a goathead. He was dressed in his usual "Bikini (or Speedo, perhaps) only" but, to my amazement, put a Jersey on as we talked. I didn't even know he carried a jersey!
Incidentally, he entered a criterium this year in Parker. Don't know how he did, but don't think he had much competition. He also recently got stepped on by a horse on the CC Trail. Rider asked, "Are you OK" he siad, "No, I hurt like Hell" at which time the rider promptyl trotted away. He had broken ribs, collar bone, etc.
Sand Creek Trail closures
Sand Creek org had announced the opening of the trail to the Commerce City wetlands park
and a detour to resume travel. However, there are some no-trespassing sign issues.
The bridge over Quebec at Sand Cr is undergoing repairs. The trail is supposed to have
a detour posted, but it isn't always the case.
Signal Ditch Trail work
The Signal Ditch trail in northern Thornton has ongoing construction and occcaisional closures
between 128th & 136th avenues.
Bridges are being added over the ditch southward for subdivision access.
Just south of 136th, a new section of the trail is in place, but that section is not open until a bridge over the ditch is in place.
Farmers Canal Trail (Northglen)
The rough asphalt section of the trail from E.B. Raines Park to Malley Dr has been replaced with a wide concrete path.

Thanks for the updates.
I no longer work in Westminster, so don't get on the northern trails any more.
Have they extended the Platte River Trail recently? A couple of years ago they had extended it about a mile beyond ??104th?? (I guess that is the street - they never had a street sign).

I took the platte north past 88th a few months ago while towing my son.
It now goes under 104th but terminates a few 1000 yards later. Unless I am really dense, it appears to not have been extended. Looking at thornton's park\trail map, the area north of 104th is still a proposed extension to north of 120th.

It now goes under 104th
That would be a big improvement! That was a tricky street to cross.
I am familiar with the extension past 104th, having taken it several times.
I used to do 20+ mile after work rides from the park at either 72nd or 74th and Broadway, down or up the Clear Creek Trail then conncecting with PRT or the trails toward Golden.
Thanks
WOW, lots of NEW Denver people here. Everyone needs to introduce themselves.

Interesting. I must be confused.
When I bike home from the DTC I take the platte to 88th. Next time I will take it north to 104th and check out the extension. I believe it will take me a little further east than I need to go.
My end goal is around 120th and Colorado. However, must....explore.

At one time I commuted from near Orchard and I-25 to 77th and Pecos - quite a ride. Then I commuted from Cherry Creek Mall until I got my rear window on my car - parked there- broken as they tried to steal a bike from the back of my van.

Hello!
I am a commuter. If I do not commute it gets difficult having a 2 year old in tow. Not impossible but the rides get shorter.
I ride a hybrid and work in the DTC while living in thornton.
Usually, I ride to the 120th ave park n ride and take the W to Broadway LRT station. Then from there ride to DTC. Once again, my ride is becoming to short. I will need to extend the ride to market street station next. Eventually, I will be riding from home to work everyday I ride. 70 miles roundtrip. Anyways that is the goal.
Currently I am at half that.

That's annoying. I thought Cherry Creek Mall was fairly secure. Being the rich mall and all.
I work along orchard and take a route another poster showed me (jamesdenver). It works wonderfully.
I don't care much for the platte trail portion of the full ride home commute but it works fine. My tolerance start ebbing when I hit the 25 mile mark. Usually, I only ride directly home once or twice a week. Anything more is too painful at my current level of fitness.
This route did show me my tolerance for padding in the shorts vs. no padding. Last week I was stupid enough to ride the 35 miles home without cycling shorts. The end result was a saddle sore and a hurt back that is still recovering. ugh! My boss is a former nurse and a licensed massage therapist. With a nice massage last week I was able to keep riding.

WOW welcome DataJunkie,
It will be wonderful when they finish the bike trail up North the last I road it to 104th and then it all dirt.
What a commute you have everyday YIKES!!! WHOLLY CRAP 70 MILES A DAY.
You should be in AWESOME CONDITION once you start that.
Anyway Welcome there is lots of us on the Denver board here. We sometimes get together for group rides.

70 miles a day is my eventual goal. The ride to the park-n-ride is about 3 miles. The ride from broadway to Orchard is 15. So, I am about halfway there. My max day is 18 to work and 35 home. Average is 18 eachway. Incidentally, I can now do the whole ride in the same time as when I use the bus in the middle to shorten the route. Yippie!
However, the way I am progressing, 70 miles a day will be attained sometime in the next few months or early spring. I started commuting in May and had issues with the 3 miles. :p
But thank you for the votes of confidence. :)
Last I checked the Platte River section isn't complete, they have quite a ways to go to connect the next section at Adams County Fairgrounds to the 104th end. I ended up going E to Counter Dr (sp?), following it to Brighton Rd to 120th then W. The fairgrounds section runs about 1.5 miles N on the W side of the Platte river before it exits to dirt road. We'll see what the weather is Tuesday/Wednesday, may take a ride out east from my house to check it out.
There are a couple trails that run N/S connected by residential streets that go from 104th & Riverdale Rd to 120th about 6 blocks E of Colorado. These are easiest to follow if you upload the tracks to a GPS from my website: http://home.earthlink.net/~gps_dr (trails are GrangeHallRvd & ThorntonNS)
You could follow the Grange Cr trail NW to Grange Park & then follow the trail North. When you exit the park, follow the street past 112th to Cherry Dr Elementary, jog left to a park, then North. You'll come to a dry lake where you will see the trail that diagonals NW to 120th.
I was surprised that they didn't add a paved shoulder or bikepath along the new McKay road connection to Riverdale Rd.
The bridge on the Signal Ditch trail S of 136th is now in place. Don't know how long it will take them to add the connecting trail sections to the bridge & open the trail.
The new bride is in place accross Big Dry Cr just W of I25. There are trails on both sides of the Creek, one follows the creek SW to Huron, the other NW along another drainage. They are both currently closed with underpass & other construction going on along Huron.
There is still no indication of construction to connect the rest of the Big Dry Cr trail to this section!
Can't find my 2005 copy of the DBTC map, but an older version erroneously shows the trail running all the way to Huron.
The Thorn Creek trail goes E under I25 from the new Big Dry Creek bridge area to the Signal Ditch trail at 128th & Lafayette.

And the hostile reaction?
You post in a thread that a lot of us enjoy, and directly insult the thread. That was a totally vacuous and unneeded post.
How about something like:

That would have been just fine.

I just read about this on RideMonkey, apparently Jim is BF's very own Sydney and I'm extremely sad to hear about this for his family and the cycling community. His contributions were endless.
If you hear about the funeral, please post cuz I'd like to pay my respects.
:(
WOW! This is some sad news, Sydney was always there to answer a question, or just pop in with some expert advice. The second reaction is fear and anger, "Teen text messaging while driving kills cyclist", I thought that drivers talking on cell phones were bad enough. Even if you are careful when riding it dosen't seem to be enough, that is scary.
Thanks for letting us know LO.
Yes, when I first heard this news I was nervous that it was one of our own.

Action Alert from Bicycle Colorado Better Riding...Much Better!
November 22, 2005
Dear Denver,
We need your help to overturn the State Patrol's decision to ban popular bike rides in Colorado. Please take a minute and follow the steps below. Together we can overturn this decision and improve safety for bike events. Thanks!!
BIG BIKE EVENTS BANNED!!
The Colorado State Patrol has just added a policy banning the biggest bicycle events in Colorado!! Their new policy:
Limits bicycle and triathlon events to 2,500 riders
The limit can be lowered at any time putting every event at risk
Bicycle tours, races, charity rides, group rides, and triathlons are affected
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Follow these four steps at: www.BicycleColorado.org/to/petition
ADD YOUR NAME: Sign the petition to overturn this damaging policy.
GET OUT THE WORD: Please send this email to other bicyclists. We can only win this issue with a huge outcry.
USE YOUR VOICE: Send an email/fax/call State Patrol Chief Mark Trostel asking him to reverse this policy and include bicyclists in discussions regarding bike events.
STRENGTHEN THE EFFORT: Bicycle Colorado is here to lead this campaign and protect bicyclists' rights but this campaign is going to require long hours and extra resources. We need your financial support to overturn this bike ban.
Take Action Now...
SAFETY HAS NO LIMITS
The State Patrol says that they are using this ban to “ensure safety.” But a random cap does not address safety of bicyclists. Safety is based on good event planning, educated bicyclists, traffic management plans, safe roads, and law-abiding motorists. A well-run event can be safe for 10,000 bicyclists and a poorly-run event can be unsafe for 100 riders.
The 2,500 cap is subjective and may be changed at any time by the State Patrol. If tomorrow they decide that 500 is a “safer” number, amazing rides are at risk like Elephant Rock, Triple Bypass, Ride the Rockies, MS 150, Iron Horse Classic, Courage Classic, Bicycle Tour of Colorado, Tour de Cure, Mount Evans Hill Climb, and on and on.
Colorado’s largest bicycle event, The Elephant Rock, reports having only one car-bike crash in nineteen years. This fact strongly questions bicyclist safety as the reason for this ban. Is this the bicycle-friendly Colorado you want?
Take Action Now...
BAD POLICY DECISION
Keep in mind that the State Patrol officers are heroes to bicyclists. They cite unsafe drivers and provide emergency assistance. But this is a bad policy decision which they need to reverse. Bicyclists, event promoters, state bicycle planners, businesses, and event sponsors were excluded from behind-the- scenes meetings on this policy.
TAKE ACTION NOW
We formally asked the State Patrol to reverse their decision and they declined. Now is the time to act. With the holiday season here, we may be strapped by a small outcry because people are too busy to act. Apathy could let this ban stay in place. Take action today and protect your right to bicycle. Together we can end bike bans and build a bicycle- friendly Colorado.
Take Action Now...
DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN IN COLORADO

Wow, I don't post for awhile and so much happens! :( To the family of Jim Price, I could only offer my condolences. What a senseless waste. Text messaging? How about driving your f***ing car?!
Anyway, I responded to the call to action from Bicycle Colorado as well. What a shame it would be if some of the larger rides are cancelled due to this new policy...
As for me, I haven't ridden seriously in a few weeks and it's bumming me out a lot. It comes down to lack of time, travel and other commitments but I can't wait to get back out on the bike. Hopefully this weekend. We've been having such great weather here (although I'd love to see some snow!), it seems a shame to waste it.
Finally - to anyone who may be reading this thread and "hating" every minute of it - why are you reading it? LOL How 'bout lightening up and go spreading your doom and gloom to a place that might actually appreciate it...?
