ok my lbs did some adjustments and I am not pleased...it now hessitates slightly when shifting from the smallest rear gear up to the next one or two...do I need to loosen the rear barrel adjustment ?? If so is that a clockwise turn facing the front of the bike from the rear ??

Yes. Loosen. It is an unscrewing motion--as if you are trying to remove the barrel adjuster from the derailleur.

Unscrew a couple of clicks. See whether it helps.

The cable needs more tension, turn the rear barrel counter-clockwise. Turn it 1/8 of a turn, then test ride. If it's still doing it turn it a tiny bit more, test. Repeat as needed. If you turn it too much and it hesitates to drop down to smaller cogs then the cable has too much tension, the barrel adjuster needs to be turned clockwise. Got it?

What do you mean by smallest rear gear?
Smallest cog or lowest gear?
The answers are opposite of each other.

Same deal; CCW adds tension, CW reduces tension.

It could be either way. It depends on what kind of rear derailleur you have.
