i've read a split link chain should be put on with the split link facing the rear of the bike. i assume that's with the link on the top of the chainline (moving forward), is that correct?

I'm not sure what's a split link chain, but I do interpret "facing rear" as you describe. It's usually as you see it, sitting on the seat.
In the old days, that's how directional tires were described (if anyone remembers the Farmer John mountain biking tires from the mid 80's - you'd say "chevrons pointing backwards, as seen from above")

I think that he's talking about a half-link. With those, you want the narrow end facing the sprocket when it's on the top of the chainline.

i mean a split link, which connects the chain together with a small u shaped link which is pushed over the pins on the opposite link, usually with a screwdriver or something blunt. i think it's kinda old techno but it's what i have on my new pista. just want to make sure i'm doing it right.

Oh i know what your talking about! I have one of those things on my garage door and an old bike. Yea you want the U clip thingy facing inward toward the sprocket, i forgot why since its been so long. The powerlink makes me forget about ugly U clip thingies taht are a pain to take off and install and hurt my hand once :p

WHat did work well was using needle nose pliers to install it, one "end of hte plier goes around the crest of the 'U' and the other the rivet of the chain and then squeeze and it clips in.

I have NEVER heard of a master link being called a split link......
and I've been around bikes longer then most.
I never knew it mattered what direction the thing goes on went. just pop it on and leave it. I don't think it cares either.
why run a masterlink when you can simply use a chain tool? chain tool is cheap and you won't cuss and hurt your fingers like you do with those stupid clips that hold the master link on....
