Bicycle Mechanics - Pedal questions

So who makes decent flat foot pedals (I do not use clip ons) ... I just want some black ones, I see Forte' has some? I have no idea who is decent though, and what pedals wont just snap on me. I am replacing the stock ones from my muirwoods 29er.

There are too many to list, and pedal spindle breakage won't be an issue on anything but absolutely bottom end stuff.

Generally cheap pedals either have crappy bearings, or multi-part bodies which break apart over time (sometimes a very short time). If you but any pedal with a one piece forged (or cast) aluminum body your should be OK. The rest is a matter of personal preference including color.

They should be. You might search around for reviews, but unless you find specific negatives they're probably .

In general Performance sells good, if not elegant, components and their house brand "Forte" products are pretty decent. They should be fine.

I *just* took a pair of these off of my bike after using them for years. The only problem I ever had with them was the screws holding the black "rat trap" part onto the aluminum center worked loose - lok-tite them and you won't have any problems.

I replaced them with Rivendell "Grip King" - expen$ive and worth every penny. But the Fortes are good, especially for the money and they'll serve you well.

yeah, just looking for pedals that do not suck, haha....and black preferably.

Have you thought about platforms if you're riding with out toe clips? Odyssey Twisted (http://www.amazon.com/Odyssey-Black-Twisted-PC-Pedals/dp/B00132G148/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_5) are a nice option to see if you like the larger footprint and grip of a platform without breaking the bank (or your shins if you take a spill because they're plastic). They're like $20 off that amazon link.

I have a pair I keep in reserve for loaning a bike out, and they've served me surprisingly well.

There's a metal version as well. I think I'd have a hard time riding a conventional pedal, with a width (depth?) made for toeclips, bare. It isn't exactly confidence inspiring, especially off road. Maybe some BMX platforms are what you're looking for. Just make sure while you're looking around the pedals you end up with have 9/16" (NOT 1/2") threaded spindles.

You highlighted a toe clip pedal they are not the same top and bottom,
you want a DH/BMX type or a commuter type.

Big diff, there is cheap plastic, and there is using the right type of plastic
in the right application , taking advantage of the specific properties of the materials..

I'd say they are well made and designed , been using them all Winter.
Commuting home after dark,a lot, I love the huge reflectors, built into the design
not stuck on because they have to add them cheap./

Drop a C note+ and there are some killer DH pedals .

I was more suggesting those as a feeler to see if you even felt you needed the added footprint of a platform. I figured less than $20 wasn't a whole lot to get your foot (ha!) in the door. Another nice thing about plastic platforms is that they aren't as sharp as true platforms and won't bite nearly as hard if you happen to slip a pedal.

MKS pedals are nice, just make sure you get the touring pedals, not the track pedals, unless you specifically want narrow pedals. The track pedals are made narrow for increased ground clearance when pedaling while leaned into turns. Many people find them to be too narrow for general use. You can also service MKS pedals easily if you get the Dust Cover Cap Wrench for about $8.

I haven't had a problem with decent plastic pedals, but IMO the best pedals you can get without going clipless are metal BMX pedals, either like these or the bear trap kind:

The spikes hold my feet better than any of the other types of flat pedals, and while they can gouge your leg it doesn't happen that often because your feet don't slip off the pedal.

- ground & polished bearing-cup inserts & cones
- adjustable outer cone & locknut
- secure outer cap
- grade 00000 ceramic/beryllium negative-mass ball-bearings

MKS makes some "plastic" pedals that are very good values. I have also seen some poorly-designed & constructed zinc/cad-plated stamped steel pedals that don't even use bearings, just a nylon sleeve that the spindle spins on.

+1 for price value I would go with MKS made in Japan pedals the better quality bearings and metal construction are well worth the price if you do a lot of riding. You can find sets for about $20-30 the extra ten dollars or so is worth it.

i scored a set of pedals like this on ebay for $ 10 shipped .. all black redlines .. i had to adjust the bearings but there smooth and nice :)

I have used DMR V8 for a long time now I really feel safe on them, but recently have taken the step to SPD, but still swap back to the DMR's when doing aggressive XC.
