Let me start off by apologizing for the longish post. I’m rebuilding an old Schwinn Traveler III, I’ve had this bike since I was kid and I’d like to rebuild it. I’m starting with just a frame and fork; everything else will be new. And, yes I know I can buy a better bike than this will ever be when finished for far cheaper, but that’s really not the point.
The plan is to make it a good utilitarian bike to rack up miles on. I’m trying to keep the look similar to how it was when I first bought it. So, I’m putting silver parts back on it like it had back in the day. So here’s what I’ve come up with:
Crank set Shimano 105 triple (5703) 172.5 arm length.
Bottom Bracket Shimano (M5700)
Front Hub Shimano 3n772 Dynomo hub 36h
Rims Mavic A719’s 700C
Saddle Brooks B17
Seat post Kalloy
Brakes Shimano 105 (BR-5700) front and rear
Brake Levers Shimano 105
Headset ???
Rear Derailleur ???
Rear Hub ???
Cassette ???
Chain ???

My questions:
Can an XT rear derailleur and cassette be used with the 105 crank set to gain lower (numerically higher) gear ratios? Do they use similar chains? On Shimano’s website it list two different chain part numbers. I’m not as young as I used to be and here in Vermont there are a lot of hills, so I figure I might need a bit more gear options to keep me from walking/pushing my bike up hill.
My seat post tube measures out at 26.2mm, does that mean I need a 26.2 seat post or a 26mm seat post to allow for slip fit?
The fork tube (Tube that comes up from the fork crown and goes through the head tube on the frame) measures out at 1 inch. The head tube (The tube on the frame that the fork pokes up thru measures out at 1.18 inches, so to me that’s a 1 inch head set, is that the case?
I’m converting from 27-inch wheels to 700c wheels; can anyone confirm that the Shimano 105 brakes will have enough adjustment to accommodate the new wheels on my frame?
