Fifty Plus (50+) - Baggy shorts for old guys

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have regular bike shorts & bibs for my road bikes, but when riding my dual-sport bike I prefer the "baggy" type since they have lots of pockets and look more casual if I'm going to the coffee shop, library, etc.
Anyway, my old pairs (both from REI) are wearing out and I'm having trouble finding some that I don't think I look stupid in. Seems the legs are being cut longer and wider these days, and my thin lower legs sticking out just don't look right. If I were younger and with beefier legs, maybe, but...
So does anyone have any recommendations on brands and models to take a look at? My local shopping options are pretty much limited to REI and Performance, and I have never had much luck buying this type of clothing sight-unseen online.

I have a pair if Canari Canyon ll that I like for MTB.
I got mine at Sport Chalet.

I wear cargo shorts (from clothing stores) with padded bike shorts underneath. I don't wear the typical biking outfit.

Lately, every thread in the 50+ forum turns into conservative/liberal etc. I just thought we might get there sooner rather than later and save a lot of discussion and writing. :)
I've been wearing a pair of Aerotech Commuter Multi-Sport shorts this Spring.

Unpadded - don't need that on recumbents - but they do sell a similar pair with padding.

I wear FOX mountain bike shorts when I commute to/from work since part of my commute is on the Metro and I don't want to offend anyone (whether they be conservative, liberal or moderate) with my tight lycra road shorts.
Don't know what specifc model of Fox mountain bike shorts they are, but they do have plenty of pockets (two of which have zipper closures), so they might be worth considering for your application.

I buy hiking shorts from Walmart/Target. They fit fine and have plenty of pockets.

I wear hiking & cargo shorts too. Once in a while I'll wear some mesh basketball-type shorts.

Never liked Baggies even for MTB riding.A few of my mates have tried them aswell and we all still use lycra.
But have to agree about buying online. All forms of clothing have to be tried before buying. There are too many variations between manufacturers for size to be standard so if they are still available- go for the same make and model you currently use and in the same size. That way you may have a chance of getting the right size online.
Might be too baggy for you, but I love my Fox Seargent shorts from REI. I have 3 pair same color (black camo) since I like them so much. Since I only ride a hybrid or MTB now, I only wear cargo shorts (over my cycling shorts). Zip pockets and velcro pockets. Plus, made with some stretch in the fabric so they are not restrictive.
You could always have them altered at your local tailor to the length you desire. I have not been able to find them on Fox Racing's website but my REI has them for sure.

I started wearing the Rivendell MUSA pants and shorts (http://simplecycle-marc.blogspot.com/2011/08/rivendell-musa-shorts.html) last year. They are really comfortable, look like plain casual shorts, have a panel rather than seams in the crotch and really, really deep pockets so it's comfortable to carry stuff. I also found these blue jeans with a gusseted crotch (http://simplecycle-marc.blogspot.com/2012/03/cycling-jeans.html) I haven't used them riding yet, but like the idea.

My son, John, will not wear cycling shorts, especially with a chamois, no matter what. I offered to buy him anything quality he wanted but no go. He is a cargo shorts guy all of the time and a roadie. I like the traditional shorts with a quality chamois. Amazon.com has some MTB shorts that aren't too baggy looking in the cycling clothing and accessories. Might try there for your needs.
I normally wear cargo shorts over my riding shorts when I'm on the hybrid. However, I do have to fold up the legs on the riding shorts so that they don't show as they are the same length as the cargo shorts.

I've seen these in REI's catalog and will have to check them out. I expect I'll end up getting something there since I get the membership benefit and mainly they have an extremely generous return policy -- I could actually wear them a time or two before deciding if I want to keep them.
I often wear tight padded bike shorts on long rides and carry some thin nylon athletic shorts in the seat bag (or rear shirt pocket) to put on when stopping in coffee shops or lunch spots.

If you have a Dual Sport bike, you should know not to buy from REI. In fact if you are a true recreationist, you should know not to buy from REI.

Another cargo shorts/pants guy. Recently bought a pair at wally world that said "Hiking Shorts". Didn't like them. The side pockets were too far forward, placing the contents in front of my thighs. OK for hiking but awkward, for me, while pedalling.

Liberals wear cargo shorts - commando style.
Libertarians wear cargo shorts with bike shorts underneath.
Conservatives wear belted cargo shorts with bibs underneath.
FWIW, where I am, I can take shorts, pants, etc. to the local tailor (who seems, with each passing year, to be more and more grateful for the work) and have them altered for five or six bucks. It's cheaper in the long run than driving around trying to find a perfect fit.

I just checked the REI website for the Fow Seargent shorts. WOW!! I'm glad I bought mine when I did! Even though they are black camo, the light color of those shorts are much too bright now. Mine are very dark, subtle, camo colored and appear all black from a distance. That's exactly why I sometimes buy things I like in 3's, b/c invariably, the maker will change the look or even discontinue the product.

Those are nice.
When I'm on one of my recumbents, there is no need for padding. And you can usually wear something like standard jean shorts, with the stitching and rear pockets, without any problems. After all, I am sitting on 3" of foam.

Ok, I don't have a Dual Sport bike, so I guess I don't know not to buy from REI. In fact, I don't know what a true recreationist is.

I too am in the cargo shorts camp when I need to spiff it up a level. When I first returned to riding I bought a couple of pairs of MTB baggies with liners but they just don't compare to regular biking shorts.

They will too. They'll give you some disposable paper things when they let you out of jail.
When I need a non-lycra look (casual rides with non serious riders, or errands, etc.), I've just been wearing my lightest/thinnest lycra bibs under my regular cargo-type shorts. It works fine, is comfortable yet stealthy enough even if the lycra peeks out every once in a while, but has the potential for getting a little warm.
I've tried just wearing shorts or baggy pants (which I did for the first 30 years of my road bike "career"), and they work fine for going to the store from my office (about 10 minutes through a neighborhood) but they just don't work for anything longer with the saddle and set up I currently have. The saddle and fit are comfortable with real cycling shorts, and I think I'd have to get a different saddle and different fit to revert back to un-chamoised shorts.
I recently bought some underwear type liners w/ chamois and plan to try them soon. If they seem to be good and more comfortable than just wearing bibs under the shorts, I'll probably buy a couple more pair.

You'd think that not needing a padded diaper in my britches would free me from over-paying for shorts....but noooo, any short with a decent wicking fabric and either flat-seams and a gusseted crotch (which is really all us old bony-assed geezers need) are still at least twice as expensive as imported Walmart cargos. :(
My favorites are the Prana Mojos (http://www.prana.com/mojo-short.html). Fabric is fast-drying and breathable, has an elastic waistband, 3 pockets, gusseted crotch and hey, I see they have them in camo now! If you get the right size they aren't too baggy either...they won't get caught in your seat and they show off your massive guads...but not your wee lil winky. ;)
I also have the J&G touring pants...I haven't worn them in years tho. They are a good option if you like a little padding, but not the constriction of tight-assed bike shorts or padded undies. They run a little short in the inseam though...you'll have a higher tan line.
RailRiders (http://www.railriders.com/men-shorts-c-104_112.html?osCsid=uucfuq9r6c4t0tstc3ja86j8a7) makes some more traditional khaki cargo shorts with good fabric and a gusseted crotch.

On a ride to the store or other local destination I just use whatever shorts I have on. I only wear bike shorts when I go on a ride of over 30 miles.
