Mountain Biking - help choose bike please

Hi, I'm thinking about buying new bike, but I don't know how should it look like. I want something that can take a lot of beating, suitable for downhill, but I don't want to sacrifice mobility uphill. It can't be heavy, I also heard full suspension bike is not best choice to go uphill. I think nice hardtail should do the trick. What do you think? Also, which one is better hydraulic or mechanic brake?, What type of shifter would be good for bike like this?

This is just to get a general idea, but I am willing to spend around 2000$.

for $2000 you can get an excellent full suspension bike. look at the trek fuel ex6, it's light, it can handle what you want to do, and it's a really solid fun bike.
If you do want a hard tail, you can get an super excellent hard tail for $2000 as well.

For $2000, just about any bike you get is going to be great.
