First time poster; hello!

A friend brought me some bikes he wants me to sell, which I'm happy to do, but I know little about vintage bikes. I used to cycle a ton (road) until I hit some medical problems, so I'm not clueless about bikes, but just have no sense of the market or what's valued. So here I am. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.

Rather than embarrassing myself by misusing terminology, I should just let the pictures do the talking. What I know (or think I know) so far is that this Raleigh is from the early 1960's, based on the serial number stamped on the frame: 33978 AV. Using a Raleigh collector's site, I was able to see that this number/letter combo sequence seems to fall between 1961 and 1965. But please correct me if I'm wrong!

Also, stamped onto the frame is Made in England, but the rear axle (I'm sure I'm using the wrong term here) reads "New Departure Model D Made in USA" so I'm not sure if the latter is a replacement part, or the bike was made from various parts in the US, etc.

I don't want to litter the place with endless images, so here's a bunch, but there's about 50 more in a picasa album I set up here. (https://picasaweb.google.com/104363766965922912672/Bike2Raleigh#)

Really cool Raleigh chainwheel:

Interesting thing about this seat is that another of the bikes my friend gave me has the same seat cover; at a glance the bikes look like the same model (shape, color), but the other is a Westfield.

Thanks for looking!

First of all-FREE that Brooks-then you may get replies/haha. It's old 4 sure-coaster brake/missing the chaincase tho. Lots of Raleighs up in your neck of the woods;so guessing a price is tough.

Do you want to sell the Westfield? It may be one I've been looking for.

Am I right in thinking a "Brooks" is the seat/cover? Or something else?

Here's the Westfield - https://picasaweb.google.com/104363766965922912672/Bike1Westfield - and I've been looking to sell it. Since those pics, I've removed the front wheel's flap; and I'm pretty sure the "STOP" sign painted on the rear wheel wasn't part of the original design....

My two cents on the Raleigh: it's missing the chain guard and the wheels are probably not original. Raleigh would have used a Perry coaster brake, New Departure was an American company.

If it is rideable you could probably get $30-$40 for it as is. It may actually be worth more in parts considering some of the parts are already missing/not original.

I'd definitely be interested in the Westfield, but as it is the cost of having it shipped would probably be equal to the value of the bike in that condition. But I'm sure you could probably find somebody who loves old American bikes in your state who'd be willing to buy it. It's an older bike than the Raleigh, made some time between 1946 and 1949. Unfortunately lightweight (skinny tire) bikes from that era are not as collectible as balloon tire cruisers, but it'd still be worth something to the right person.

Hey PhoBrek, welcome to C&V. I'm no help whatsoever with your bike but nice to see another member in Massachusetts. I was born in "Woosta"
