Foo - So how do you become a moderator around here?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I actually want to know. Is being a mod your job?

mods are volunteers. You have to be messed in the head to do the job. First, you have to behave, second, you have to be patient.
The only way 53-11 could be a mod is if he brought his knee pads with him.
See? Behaving sux.

Lord Opie is pretty correct. And the knee pad thing wouldn't work with me :)...
hi, its volunteer but a lot of work. I put in an hour to 3 hours to many more a day at times sifting through posts trying to keep things sane. The hardest parts is walking the line between understanding good sarcasm and eliminating the knobs :)

I've been a moderator on a couple of car-related discussion forums. Including: forcarenthusiasts.com (now projectam.com), vwvortex.com, and clubvr6.com. I resigned from the first one, F.C.E. because i was having a hard time not arguing and remaining neutral against some of the idiots there. VwVortex is one of the largest single-manufacturer automotive forums on the net. Its probably about the size of this forum. Lots of turbulance because people tend to fight a lot about cars more than bike. I guess cause cars cost more, and you can do a lot more with them as far as modification. I quit that job because it took a lot of time. It wasn't an fun anymore, even though I was usually pretty neutral on that board. Finally clubvr6, which is smaller - and i would probably still be there if it weren't for the fact that I've seriously picked up the training pace for collegiate cycling, and with college i don't have a lot of time for cars. My car is now just my car, i love it - but its not the same as before. I'm in the process of choosing another moderator for the board.
Typically the number one way to NOT become a moderator is to ASK to be a moderator.
IN all my past experience, I was picked by having a long history, with lots of posts. I had to prove my knowledge of the board subject, and also prove that throughout my history at the site I did not show any large bias's or engage in arguments or anything...

Too many variables to count. I know I have spent time on many forums and this is one of the cleanest by far. Aolese isn't rampant (thank god) and repeat posts are pretty minimal in comparison. Useless posts like the constant barage of "which bike is best" is pretty minimal in comparison to other forums too. I don't know specifics about the ones you listed but on bodybuilding ones I was on in the past, the differences aren't as in your face as a site like this. Maybe users in those forums follow all the rules listed by the owner of the site, maybe its less rules.
Too many variables. I know sites that got so pissed off they booted upwards of 20 users and locked new user applications for months. I know sites that need even the smallest moderation to improve. I know geek sites where the average person is terrified to tread because of the arogance of the user. Maybe it is because this site is a semi pay site and the users paying want a clean site to go to, moreso than others.
I really don't know, I am just guessing, I never sat down to ask joe his reasons, I just like the site and help enforce the rules he put in place.
Well, I don't exactly know, but I know I fought real hard against the likes of members like Malestrom... oh, is that Malestrom posting right before me? Whoops! :D

It finally closed but it was a programming site with tutorials. I was in there and they kept chasing away newbies. Others tend to be *nix sites. Most ignorant group of users around (yes I am generalizing but I rarely run into a true unix expert who is willing to help freely). Here is the standard response to every question
"RTFM"
"Ok..fine, why is this forum around then arrogant BEEP"
"BANNED"
Koffee,

Can a moderator moderate another moderator and in returned be moderated by the moderator for which he or she initially moderated?
I haven't seen MediaCreations around for quite a long time. Anyone know what gives?

Honestly? Like 1. There's only been a couple of names mentioned lately, but so far, I don't think Joe really felt the need to expand the team... yet. Plus, with all the complaints that we overmoderate, what's to say we don't have too many? We might have to de-mod.... ;) :D

We wouldn't list who we are looking a publicly. Sorry.
Keep in mind it isn't just participation. That is one aspect. We have certain time slots to fill ;) The current mods also have to be able to get along to some degree (not always agreeing but mature debate ;)) and they have to themselves follow the rules. Try to find someone to fit all 5 basics narrows down the competition pretty quick :)

Let's see....
1. Participation
2. Time slots
3. Get along
4. Follow rules
5. ?
Does acting like an ass and pointing out simple typos help chances at all?

Well, at the forum I moderate (Antionline.com) we have over 63,000 registered members. Does that count as "huge"?

Probably not. I suspect 5 is "be able to write legible posts". Nothing, IMO, is more embarassing than a mod that can't put two sentences together to make sense. Then again, I do that all the time. Go figure... :)

Ca't remember the 5th one actually. I didn't post it for a reason and it was partially a joke.
