I've had mixed success with using 9/10 speed derailleurs with 8 speed chains. Chain is wider than the cages are designed for. Might work better with a 9 speed chain, also depends on what crankset you are using. STI or DT shifter?

The above recommendation to run a 9-speed chain is probably a good idea.
This combination is more likely to work well if the crankset is a standard double.

Yes, you can. I did this on an 8 speed triple, but it did have some chain rub that I could not get rid of. Not too bad but it was anoying. I changed over to a 10 speed chain, cassett, and Ultegra 6703 RD and now everything works like butter... smooth!

You're shifting a 10-speed cassette with 8-speed shifters? Are the shifter friction or did you mean the new cassette is 8-speed?

I'm currently using a Shimano 105 10-speed triple front derailleur with a 105 8-speed triple crank and an 8-speed chain and cassette and everything shifts great. But........ I'm using a friction front shifter. :)
