I have a friend who loves her old CF road bike but is struggling on the hills. She has standard cranks and a 12-21 cassette. There is an 8 speed exa-drive 13-26 cassette on Amazon. Would this along with a new (longer) chain to accommodate the 26 be the easiest and cheapest solution?

Checking VeloBase (http://www.velobase.com/ListComponents.aspx?SearchID=61255a3a-ced6-45ae-a822-f76c873f33b0), it looks like you should be safe with a 26T cog.
