Bicycle Mechanics - Bottom bracket clicking

I own a 2011 Specialized Allez Comp Compact


Recently i noticed a clicking sound when i pedal. When im not pedaling theres no click. If i pedal softly with little pressure on the pedals.. it will click less often. I also noticed that while standing still.. pushing down on one pedal will cause the bottom bracket? to shift to one side and then i push down on the opposite side it will shift. Not sure what exactly is shifting but i can see the movement.


Anyone know what it is or could be? I commute to work everyday and wondering if i should be ridding it that way.


Im gonna drop it off in the shop as soon as i have some time.


Im a little worried and hope its nothing serious. Hopefully just minor adjustments.

Mine's been doing that whenever I shift into the lower gears... But when I stop pedaling and use the freewheel for a couple seconds it stops...

your BB is lose , it need to be adjusted .

This sounds like the BB is loose and needs to be tightened adjusted. It is not uncommon for BB's to loosen up from a lot of riding usually just tightening adjusting will fix the problem. Also check to make sure both crank arms are on tight this can also cause a clicking like sound.

I'll add that in some cases, the BB did work loose over a long period of time because it has become worn with minor pits in the bearing races or spindle depending on the type of BB you have. Tightening may not eliminate the problem or if it does, you may have to over tighten and this may interfere a little with the crank's ability to turn.

At the same time, check the pedals to see if cages are loose if you have caged pedals or perhaps the body is loose on the spindle.

And if you've been commuting, rust and grit can get into links pretty fast in the wet season and cause some links to get stiff. Clean and lube the chain too or if worn, replace it.
