i am going to be living in gainesville at the beginning of febuary and was wondering how many other people live there as well. i live in st. pete right now and rarely ever see anyone else with a fixed gear/single speed bike and everytime i go to gainesville ALL i see is fixed/single bikes so i'm looking forward to the move. anyways, i was just wondering who lives up there and if there are ever any cool bike related things going on up there. thanks!

I left gainesville about a year or so ago. I wasn't really riding at the time, but I saw the Critical Mass folks every once in a while. Don't miss out on the Krishna lunch on the Plaza of the Americas... damn good food for cheap. It kept me going for a few years.

a pre-emptive welcome to you...

i don't think there's much in the way of events or organization among fixed/ss riders here, though I'm hoping to change that soon -- want to race? The roadies of the UF/Chain Reaction team have rides almost every day of the week, but I've never donned the lycra and joined them.

moving for school? work?

i am going to finally get my **** together and try to give this school thing a shot. i'm hoping that the minimilistic lifestyle up there will allow me to work very little and focus on a lot of school. as far as the lack of organization between bikers goes i don't really think there is any excuse for it. i guess it is most likely just another case of people taking what they have for granted. one of my friends was actually on the UF bike team when he was in school and we plan on doing some rides (however, i will not be wearing lycra).

its pretty easy to live cheaply here; doubly so if you get financial aid. Remind me when you move in February and we'll ride. And what are you riding these days?

jitensha de go!, chrisproject, wambat: thanks.

i've never been to gainesville. i've never been to florida. but when i was seventeen years old, g-ville sounded like the greatest place on earth. i mean, fuel for the hate game was an amazing album. still is. i know what i'm listening to tonight.

right now i have a single speed univega and an almost complete fixed motobecane. both bikes are nothing flashy..at all...haha. they definitely serve their purppose and i have a great time when riding them so that is all i need.

Well, I've lived in Gainesville for 16 years, maybe I can help.

And yes, there have been a lot of good bands started here, they all went to my High School in fact...

Anyway, its a pretty... interesting place.

You have downtown, along University Ave., which is the most interesting place. Lot of thrift shops, LOT of bike shops. Archer Rd. has a lot of shopping place like Best Buy and whatnot. NW Newberry Rd. is where the mall is, a cool place to go.

For biking you have craploads of extra-wide bike lanes and concrete. You also have the Gainesville-Hawthorne trail. 16 miles of sweet 10' wide concrete.

The best cycling club in the Southeast, The Gainesville Cycling Club is here. Weekly events pretty much. Club fee is $15 a year, so nice. They also host a Brevet Series, and 4-5 century rides a year. www.gainesvillecyclingclub.org

If you are a student at UF, you can join the national-championship cycling team. They have rides twice a day, seven days a week. A very good team to be on. http://grove.ufl.edu/~cycling/

Hope I have been informal enough!
