Howdy Folks,

I just got done lacing a SA 3-speed hub to a 700C CR18, and when I put it on the frame (126mm spacing), I have a few mm left over. Can I just use any old washers and spacers to fill this space, or do I need some special spiffy anti-rotation washers? Sheldon (my homey) says something about specialized 3-speed washers, but I'm not sure whether or not he merely has his head up his arse.

If your frame is steel and the space is indeed just a wee bit I would just clamp it in there. A steel frame will have enough flex to tolerate this and will spring back when the hub is removed. If, on the other hand, your frame is aluminum, titanium or carbon, please disregard. DanO

The 3-speed washers Sheldon mentioned are specially shaped oval holed washers designed to not rotate on the axle. Pretty rare anymore, but I dont see them as being entirely needed. As long as the axle nuts are tight and the bearing cones are locked in, there is really no issue with normal washers that fit.
