I have a Sturmey Archer 3 spd wheel that I would like to use on a 27" wheel frame. The old steel rim is very corroded. Is there a way to lace this hub to a rim of fewer hole drilling? I will probably have to go 700c DIA, but is there a pattern of skipping a few hub holes to get it on a diff (32h or 36h) rim?
Thanks
Let's see... you have spokes going in four directions, so divide by four. That gives you ten, and 32/36h rims need eight/nine spokes in each direction.
So can you imagine 8/10 or 9/10 spaced evenly? I can't. You could prolly build it, but spoke lengths would vary a bit. There aren't that many mismatched combinations that work well; 24h radial on 36h for example is fine.

O_o ?
If it's so private, why tell us?
And if not, why not share?

When you ask the same question of other regulars here who do the same...maybe I'll answer...

Eh? What's the big deal?
You're not being a little paranoid, maybe? I'm not having a go, mate. Just curious.
The only reason I can think of is to notify the OP, but it's pretty obvious when you have a PM anyway, even if you haven't enabled email notification or whatever...
Just seems redundant.

Sturmey archer hub shells are replaceable, without buying a whole hub
so you can get a 36 hole shell for the old beast.
SJS cycles, in the UK, if not Sturmey USA

I've never tried, but it might be possible to get an undrilled rim custom-drilled for 40 holes. I suspect you'd have to find a very good bike shop.

But you'd have a very strong wheel.

That's the logic behind the 40/32 rear/front spoking on old Raleighs. Just one more reason why they'll outlast everything apart from Schwinn Varsities and granite.

Why not just use a 40-hole rim? E.g.
R740 Rim Araya Alloy 700c x 40 hole $18.00
http://www.bikesmiths.net/parts.html
Sun Rhyno Lite 700c 40 hole Blk/Sil Rim In Stock Price: $34.00

40 hole rims are popular with tandems, so they should be fairly available:
