Foo - I axed the end of the year awards.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

And there will be no more of them in the future. I'm just really disgusted and ticked off by all of the crabbyness that they have recieved. Go out and get some fresh air, get out on a bike and ride who cares if it's 20 below and there is a foot of snow on the ground go out and do something. I am not mentioning names, since we all need to get out side and ride or do something in the fresh air. Loosen up, the cold air won't hurt you, this crabbyness and pissing and moaning will hurt you in the road ahead.

Well, the year end awards were kind of fun. They weren't worth getting your shorts in a knot over, whether you were nominated, ignored, dissed or whatever. In the end, they were utterly inconsequential.
They're gone?
Oh, well!
And I was really enjoying the show. Each time I looked, a new award popped up. Some of them right creative. But I guess this whole award thing was like an iceberg. Most of it was not in the open.

too bad about the awards.
oh well, life goes on and Trollie gets another boyfriend :p
Always treading the line between good and bad. I have to side with DF on the negative awards*. I didn't agree with DF on setting up the over-50s forum, and I will stir him up occasionally on it. But I haven't really found him as curmudgeonly as some on these forums. And I think he knows that I am only stirring him up because I am not actively campaigning for the 50s forum's removal. I think he also was instrumental in setting up the Recreational Cycling forum. Perhaps dues to him for actually making a contribution to the structure of BF instead of heaping unwarranted ***** on him.
The awards this year degenerated into a rabble. Not Kona's fault. Not DF's fault. Probably partly mine and every other poster who put up cr@p comments. Had the voting been just that -- votes without comment -- we might have got somewhere.
There's no reason why the awards cannot be reconsituted next year with some very solid rules --no negative categories; nominations period; nominations received and seconded and sent by PM to a designated mod; posting of maximum of five nominations for votes only; no comment. Alternatively, have the mods receive the nominations and decide between themselves (after all, they know more about each member than any of us); and there can be a vox-pop poll for people's choice.
* Put this in perspective by reading 521Aussie's post on Forum Suggestions under the Insults Thread.
By the way, it doesn't mean I won't be harsh on imbeciles, trolls and other assorted idiots who should know better. There'd be no fun being a member here, otherwise.

Glad it came to this. Thanks for the brief glimpse of sunlight, I am going back to the FX/SS forums. Now you know why I stay in there like a hermit.

sounds like more work than needed for something that is commonly meant for fun. I howled at the fact that I recommended MORRISSEY for Most Charming and the Inanimate Carbon Rod as member of the year and they made the cut. Kona is a stand up Mod for being so inclusive, even if he rides a geared bike... I say dump them completely if so many rules need to be implemented. Are we going to afternoon tea with the Brontes? Or Oscar Wilde?
I choose the latter. And cucumber sandwiches...
So many rules? What are you talking about? Has the hermit life made you *that* simple? Better than the bloody rabble it degenerated into with rules (yes rules!!!) made on the run.
And your choice of author isn't particulary supportive of your argument. Wilde was a highly regarded and recognised writer. Maybe the contributions of some on these forums needs a bit of positive recognition. The sort of recognition Wilde yearned for, IIRC, at times during his career.
Arrghh, go back to hole you came from. Shame. I think I might have voted for your avatar.

While I don't agree with KonaRider24's actions, I must commend him for having the cajonees to claim his actions.
While we're busy making rules, I'd like to make a motion for a new rule that when a MOD makes any edits to a post or thread, (Deleting content or thread, locking a thread or moving it) that they MUST annotate said post or thread with their username and reason for doing so.
Any seconds?

Opposed, 'Nay'.

Sometimes there just isn't time to discusss what we did and why.

If I mess in a thread, delete stuff etc. I will usually say so. Sometimes
tho I prefer to do this in a PM as to not air someones dirty laundry in public.

***** man, the rules are about the same in number as those that were slung together for the blood-fest... in fact fewer, because it removes the "rule" that allows comment. But you're obviously so up yourself with the carbon rod, you don't realise that. Does the rod glow? It might make *your* hole look a little brighter.
As it stands, my hole obviously is in a far better place in the world than yours.
As to the rest <shrug>. I don't take it all that seriously.

Actually, I would just be happy knowing a thread was moved. It might cut some of the confusing posts that result. Coming into the middle of a heated Politics/Religion thread that originated in the recumbent section, can create misunderstandings right out of the gate. Knowing the reason is not important to me. Generally, I find the moderation on this forum to be somewhat benign. The moderators all seem to let us flounder around to our heart's content. I like that.

Well, you can't take it seriously. You are from Australia fer crikey sakes. From what I gather, the only things you guys from down under can take seriously are Aussie Football, Beer, and women. And I may be wrong about the woman thing.
How about the moderators vote on the awards in the MOderator's forum. Then post the results out here in FOO!
I really hate to see this tradition die because of a few grumps.

Where's your mind-reader's licence Raiyn? I don't recall referring to your post and linking it to DF. There were several veiled references to me stirring up DF. And fine, call me what you like. I take you about as seirously as I take you.

Ok, everyone has spoken their minds about the subject. It's a whole year till the next awards were due, so let's give it some time for everyone to mull things over. Maybe the mods will change their minds in a year's time, maybe not. I think we have about beat this horse to death now!

When I set up the first set of annual awards in 2002 (Kona took over last year when I was on tour), it was more or less as it is above. There were no negative categories, and while comments were allowed on the forum, none of those were negative either. It was kind of "self-moderating" if you like. However, like most things on this forum in recent times, it all went downhill from there. The decline in decorum regarding the awards since then basically reflects the decline in the overall standards on this forum in that time, too.
Laying down a few "rules" might be a good idea, but it also might lead to another 40-post censorship thread. Personally, I'd just let the thing die. It seems that since the sense of community in this place has disappeared, these sort of arguments, insults and whining are a fact of life.

I guess that's a side effect of the burgeoning membership.
More and more people.....yada, yada......diverse demograhics having increasing
representation, etc, etc...yaya, yada........ = more arguments.
Agree? Or do you have a different theory about the apparent decline in civility?

That's largely what I believe too, although I'm not sure it's down to diverse demographics strictly speaking. I guess it's also a magnet for trolls and the like, too -- a greater feeding ground. I don't necessarily thing more arguments is a bad thing -- arguments can be done in a civilised fashion if people are prepared to simply stay with the topic rather than fling childish insults, and therein lay the problem. When a forum has a sense of community, members seem to be prepared to stay on topic. As a site gets larger, it becomes less about discussion the issue at hand, and more about "winning an argument" or "proving a point".
Basically, there's an optimal level of active membership that provides the best balance between forum traffic and mentioned the side effects, and it appears as though we have surpassed that level.
Overall, it's called anarchy. Degeneration into a no-rules environment. Helps the robbers and looters come in and do their damage. Innocent people die.
And it always amuses me that those who want to live by the no-rules principle always want to run to their own version of rules when it suits THEM.
And Raiyn. Ummm, why the aggro???? You have been least from my mind when posting on DF specifically. HE knows what I mean. So let it rest, eh?
Basically, there's an optimal level of active membership that provides the best balance between forum traffic and mentioned the side effects, and it appears as though we have surpassed that level.
And that's why there are roaming b@stards like me who weed out the imbeciles, idiots and trolls so we can keep the membership at a level or two above the lowest common denominator.
