I'm hoping that you guys will be able to help me out. I have a Sanyo generator that goes in front of the rear wheel and it hasn't been used in a few years. I put it on the bike and noticed that it worked great for about 100ft then a high pitched screeching noise almost like a metal on metal grinding started. When that noise came on the light would shut off. Im guessing something in there is sticking but I'm wondering if I can possibly put some grease or some sort of lubrication in there to fix it?

The part in question

Might be easier just to replace it. It's $44 plus S&H from Peter White Cycles http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/sanyo.asp

True, however I hardly ride at night and already have some battery operated lights I carry with me once in awhile. I wasn't sure if this would be bright enough or how I would even like it. Just was gonna give it a try but I guess not anymore.

An Update:

I figured it was probably just in need of some lube so I had some electrical cleaner and lubricant and figured that would be safest to try. So I sprayed some in there and rolled it a bit sprayed some more and then tested it. WORKS LIKE IT IS BRAND NEW!!! So we will see how long that lasts and I hope it is a long time. Thanks for the help and if anyone has similar problems in the future hope this thread will help.

How do you like the dynamo? I haven't really seen any reviews of this dynamo type. I am thinking about getting rid of my battery lights and using one of these.

i have that gen and like it. road it through 3 feet of water during the last hurricane we had here and it worked great thought i would miss my kick stand. i now use the wedged cork in the brake handle i saw on bike hacks.

... it worked great for about 100ft then a high pitched screeching noise almost like a metal on metal grinding started.

That sounds very familiar.

Any further update, after the lube job?
