Fifty Plus (50+) - I am so proud of my daughter

She is 23 years old, lives in Minneapolis and works for a non profit. She is very responsible and takes care of business.

She had her bike stolen last October and now that it is spring wanted a new one.

Her criteria, after much thought and questions from me came down to needing a commuter bike with touring capabilities.

She looked at the used bike scene and did not find what she needed in her size/fit.

She shopped at many LBS's and found she really would need to spend $1200.00 for a bike.

Once she new she had to bite that bullet she again went to the market again seeking a bike that would fit her needs and her body.

A Surly Crosscheck did not ride well for her. She went back to REI and bought this: http://www.rei.com/product/807242/novara-verita-bike-2012

I think it was a good choice considering her budget and she can always replace it should it not suit her need.

She did it on her own, after identifying her needs and did not run out and buy the first bike she saw.

For one to be as pragmatic and capable as she must certainly be the result of expert parenting. Kudos all around for a job well done! :thumb:

Some young people I meet have a strong sense of entitlement. They are part of a "give me generation". It is refreshing to hear stories of fiscal prudence.

I'm not expecting them all to ride Huffy bikes. Your daughter chose value for money.

Well done, you should be rightly proud if her for all of her accomplishments. My daughter is in Atlanta, Ga working for a nonprofit after getting her MNPO degree from UGA. They grow up and make their own mark so fast. Nice bicycle choice, too.

She done good. It should serve her well. And, REI has one of the best return policies in the business.

I was just admiring the Novara bikes at REI on Sat. I liked that one and the Randonee. There's hope for that generation.

I'm just glad to know that there are some young people out there who see the fun and benefits of cycling, and that they are not all about shopping malls and Hondas. (or whatever the "gotta have it" car of the moment is. I'm not up on this stuff at all.)

She went to college with a Schwinn hybrid. In her third year or so she now loved off campus and began commuting and hauling groceries etc. She bought a classic Trek light touring bike. She and I did take one tour together and she caught that bug. The Trek was stolen and this is the bike she decided upon. I think she thoughtfully considered what she needed and ultimately did make the best decision.

She also set a budget for the bike. Then, like the rest of us blew a big hole in it. LOL.

I have informed her of this site and do hope she shows up. Never know though. I did hear that her bike was in the shop but she did not know if it was set up yet. Yes, I will post some pics of she and I .

She did offer a ride with her old man. I am looking forward to that. As most of us in this forum with young adult children know, we do not have a great deal of opportunity to spend time with the kids.
