Hello all,

I want to build a commuter and possibly do cyclocross next year. I would also like to have a training bike that I can ride fast outside and not have to worry about crashing, or bending a expensive wheel, etc. After some debate I have decided to build a cyclocross bike.

A couple concerns though... most cyclocross bikes only go to 60cm... I need 63 cm minimum, actually need a 64 but most manufacturers do not make this size. The question is, is there a frame that is reasonably priced, steel probably but al is fine. I want something that can take crashes well and will not look rediciously fancy so I can lcok it up and have it look less enticing to theves. I would like a non glossy or silver frame.

I already have alex 16 700 cc wheelset that I would like to use. I plan on using probably 28 wide tires on them but maybe 25 or 23's like they have currently. Tires will be chosen later.

Components are the question. Since it is going to be a while until I upgrade my racing bike I will not try and canabalize that bike. I want a double, probably a something that has a lower top ring (like a 48) and a lower second ring, like something in the 30's. I would like something that shifts nice but is not rediciously fancy... campy is an option as is sram etc.

I am going to take the handlebars and stem off my road bike and upgrade these. All the other parts like the headset etc will be figured out later.

Can you guys give me some part sugestions for the bike. Mostly the frame is important and then the crankset.

Thanks as always...

64? That's pretty big. Depending on how much moolah you want to spend you might want to try something custom like a Waterford. The size you up, you pick the paint, shell out the money, wait a bit, and you have a bike built pretty much only for you (literally because 64 is quite large).

Sorry I didn't see that "reasonably priced" before. Might want to scratch the custom idea then. The Surly's, Redlines, and Gunnar's only go to 62 but I'm 6 foot 2 and my 56cm Redline Conquest fits me very well, just because they measure differently.

Get hold of Leonard Zinn. He builds frames for big folks.

I can second the Conquest sizing. I'm 6'5" and ride a 60cm Conquest. I only ride the bike for cyclocross--no road training--and could even go a little smaller if I needed to. Having a big frame in a 30/45 min., technical cyclocross race isn't a necessity.
