Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Gitane, Grand Sport De Luxe, needs alot of work, good project $50 on CL.

I need a little help guidence is this a good price and bike for my next project bike. I have built up a similar Gitane and realy liked it but it was a little too small and this one is just the size I want.

Gitane 60cm road bike- a project - $50

Gitane, Grand Sport De Luxe, needs alot of work, good project for a single speed.

Steel frame, 10 speed.

The bike has cotter pins.

Weinmann center pull brakes.

Wheel rims have rust.

Also I figure the frame could also work as nice replacement frame for my great riding but cosmetically challenged Juenet and would just really pop with the parts on the Juenet, with, yellow bar tape and cables.

$50 seems about right.

I had a Gitane just like that, same color too, when I lived in Denver. I sold it for I think $60 or $75, but it did have the better/more desirable Mafac Racer brakes. Nice handling bike. If the derailleurs aren't buggered and nothing is majorly wrong then $50 is probably a good deal.

I to would much prefer the Mafacs like are on the Jeunet some of the best brakes I have ever road a little hardto adjust set but ounce you learn get used to setting them up the multiple adjustments make them one great brake. The Wiemans are deffenitly a a mark against this bike good call.

Cotter pins aren't a big issue for me I have redone enough French and other 60's and 70's cottered pinned stuff with nicer vintage alloy cranks which I can get cheap or maybe free I have a couple sets that this doesn't bother me much on a project bike. What I'm concerned about is the quality of the frame and where it may line up in Gitanes product line from the 60's maybe early 70's.

As a strict project bike I would stay away. Steel rims, cottered crank, etc. I just don't see enough potential there. But if you are after the frame to do a component swap from your Jeunet then I'd say $50 is a good price.

Surprised to see a neglected French bike with paint still on it! Most of the ones I've seen are a mess. The French really didn't know how to paint anything:

OH, Cottered cranks. DUH. I thought that was some bizarro code for quick release wheels.

Pretty low on the totem pole given the steel rims, cottered cranks, plastic Simplex derailleurs, etc.

In general, words like Sport, Grand and Deluxe in model name are code words for bottom end.

Now the paint looks good, and with the transplant of better parts, it would make a decent bike.

Here's the thing I saw in the add was the 60cm Vintage possibly better 60's French frame with decent original paint. If the paint looks as good in person and the frame is decent I will likley buy it.
