Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - Speakers for biking

OK so many here feel earphones are not a good idea for biking. What speakers have you foudn that work?

I've had one of these for several years now attached to my hybrid.

Bump. Anyone have a good system they use out of the box?

A guy caught up to me last week with a cool little speaker that was that fit in the water bottle cage and held is I phone or I pod in it. It sounded real nice, like it was a high quality unit. I think it was this but not sure of brand.

i've been thinking about building something with "marine grade" speakers.

The guy who leads the local community evening rides hauls this behind him, it's pretty friggen' awesome. Still have to ask how he powers the thing.

How about those behind the neck "old school" headphones like Koss SportaPros?

IMO external speakers are more difficult to use and eat more batteries when compared to headphones. If the headphones are something else than tight-fitting earplugs, you can hear traffic through them pretty well, too.

i use pretty much the exact same thing.. i can use my ipod on it or my cell with iheart radio app.for running on 2 aa batteries it is real good. long battery life too. plus it has nice storage in it too. i would never use ear buds or headphones...if you use these your just asking for it

Yeah so I asked about the big speaker/iPod setup I posted in the pic above. Dude powers it for the entire group ride, usually 2-3 hours, on 8 AA batteries! :eek:

The sanctimonious comment that comes up every time this discussion is raised, that contributes exactly nothing.

I ride the same route 340 times a year, 90 minutes a day. Yes, sometimes I ride and enjoy the sounds of nature, but in February when it's -5 degrees outside, I'm riding into a 15 MPH headwind up and down hills and it's blowing snow, there's not a bit of wildlife around and no sound but the howling wind and this is (REALLY, no foolin') the 2000th time I've ridden this route, excuse me for wanting to listen to an audiobook to pass the time.

Ditto in the morning - the birds aren't up when I am. The silence is nice sometimes but not every friggin day of the year.

Not been 'sanctimonious'.
Have covered over 300,000 miles on bicycles (singles/tandem) and never wanted to use any audio device.
Yes, even rode in Michigan for several years, back in the early 1970s. I know what winters are like. That's why we moved to sunny AZ decades ago.
Had an old guy then used to carry a pocket radio and he'd be blasting either music or the ball game on club rides. Annoying to me but pleasurable to him.
