Why all the odd looks? It's clearly a water bottle and tool bag holder for a runner.

But seriously, it might be some kind of physical therapy device.

I know we are all making fun of it but I really am curious what it is for. I was thinking physical therapy too except that it doesn't look like it would support much. And you can't really coast in it.

It looks like some type of running analyzer and training aid for long distances. It also allows bringing water and nutrition on long runs.

of all things!

The RunBike has created low impact running.

Why do we need low impact running? Many runners have learned that they cannot tolerate the pounding associated with their favorite exercise. For some this means switching to less attractive exercise alternatives and venues. Ultimately this can mean less effective exercise, or even, less exercise.

The RunBike was developed to enable more people to run more miles for more years in their lives. The basis of the objective lies in two accepted realities. The first is the myriad aches, pains, and injuries associated with conventional habitual running. The second is the burgeoning body of research pointing to the medical benefits of exercise.
blah blah.. it goes on..

You know I thought riding a bike was kind of low impact (until you fall off) so I'll pass.

I'm guessing a modern take on a velocipede (ancestor of the Bicycle)/hobby horse or like others have conjectured some kind of therapy device..

I would have guessed some weird adult sized version of a stride bike or hobbyhorse.

Its really quite ingenious. Not for everyone, but I can see a use for it. An overweight person could use to get back into shape without ruining their knees. Once they got some weight off, they might not need the device. P.S. Not everyone likes riding a bike.

I have never seen an exercise device like this, neat.

I can see a lot of potential for it in a rehab situation for someone that is unable to fully support their weight for a variety of reasons. I have seen similar devices used in swimming pools at a local rehab center.

I ride quite a bit, but I tried running for one winter. I loved the simplicity of it: shorts, shoes, mp3 and you're out the door and on your way. This thing is kind of anti simple.

Admittedly the reason I gave up after one winter is that the hard surface running was hurting my knees, so maybe it's not so dumb.

How about using it for ultra accurate distance measurement of cycling and walking/running routes

I can see the advantage of this if water exercises were out of the question

How does it support a person without riding all up in their business?

I've tried to run in a climbing harness, gawlee that sucked.

^elite runners use a treadmill version of this actually. its usually a situation where a 5k/10k athlete wants to make the leap to half marathon/marathon competition and need to put in the miles but can't handle the repetitive stress.

I'm betting more for the ego trips of many runners.

When I was in college I sometimes trained alone for Rugby. I'd run the cross country course. Dirt, much easier on the knees than pavement. But much harder ot put on the miles. I rarely saw anyone there. Several of the cross country runners, a couple other Rugby players and one baseball player. That was it. But joggers on asphalt everywhere.

That things lets you increase the miles. Running dirt or sand is far better, but does not have the ego numbers.

While I would feel like a total fool in one of those things, they do look somewhat fun. I mean, start running, build up speed, and then just do a mid-air crouch and gliiiiiiidee. Extend your arms outwards and start making airplane noises for some extra "childhood desires fulfilled" points!
