One of my usual ways to waste time online is to surf the fixed gear gallery. In my surfing I've run across a few really nice, no expense spared, fixies. These fixies seem to have all the best parts that I one day hope to afford. Here is one of my top picks for no expense spared fixie:

http://fixedgeargallery.com/2004/f/forsman.htm

What would be your top pick be? (I'm not looking for prettiest, or most practical, etc, I'm looking for fixies that look like the owner spared no expense when they built them up.)

Well, you wouldn't find it on FGG, but my vote would be for a Pinarello Montello with Nimble wheels, tubular tires, and Vision Tech bullhorns. Oh, and it would be painted matte black for indie effect.

actually, if it was a true no expense spared track bike (for track use only), i'd hook up one of those BT CF frames with campy record pista and the ghibli wheelsset, all white.

sorta like this (http://www.londoncyclesport.com/bikes/bt_track.html), except all white.

if we're talkin' ultimate street track, then the IF as i outlined above.

Last July I placed an order w/ Sacha at Vanilla for a complete fixed gear bike. I also gave him an unlimited budget. The bike will be ready in the second half of this month. It fits the description of a "spare no expenses bike", including some stuff that's never been seen before. Will post pics when arrives.

Btw, newb here and need to extend a "thank you" to a lot of you. I lurked for a year+ and borrowed a lot of helpful info from everyone's posts to help put the bike together.

I'll throw ya a bone: As far as I know, it'll have the world's first carbon seatpost WITH handcarved/polished lugs. Sacha is taking a normal stainless seatpost, cutting off the lower 1/2, then carving the upper half to look like a frame lug w/ long tips coming down. He will then take carbon tubing and insert it up into the carved out post making the "tube" portion of the seatpost. The two halves will be bonded just like a regular carbon seatpost's head is bonded to the tubing.

Please keep in mind that wet shorts chafe more than dry ones. Please change clothing before riding. This will also keep your saddle smelling better.

My dream fixie will weigh 8 pounds or less.
Anyone have about $6-7,000 to spare?

I figure a custum carbon frame with lots of titanium and magnesium
parts along with a set of ADA track wheels would do the trick. :D

Chimay - did i read your post correctly? your vanilla will arrive in late January? i ask this 'cause i also ordered a fixie from sacha (back in August) and was told it would take until Aug '05. if yours pops out sooner i can hope mine may be soon to follow... aaarrrrggghhh!!!

Chimay
01-04-05, 11:12 AM
Moondog,
Sorry, but you'll probably have to wait til August. Sacha and I worked a special deal w/ my frame to get it done sooner. It is also costing me an additional "expediting fee". His plan was to do mine on weekends and days off. Not much other time to fit another frame in. It ended up that he's cleared his schedule for January and is using this whole month just to do my bike.

Shadow,
Hi. Nice to see you over here also.

Auk,
Excellent! I've got someone here that hates me after 3 posts! (insert winking smilie here if I could figure out how.)

chimay - thx for the info. sounds like you worked a sweet deal - it's gonna be tough for me to wait the next 8 months or so! please do post some pics when it's finished - i'd like to see your choices.

Moondog,

Cut and pasted the "specs" from an email from Sacha. These are my "choices". Only seatpost and stem info are missing (Sacha and I talked are way through those.) Seatpost is as noted in earlier post. Stem is a 1" threaded, lugged (hand carved), polished, painted 31.8mm detachable face stem.

frame -fixed road

tubing- ox plat upgrade

lugs- Hand made and carved. lengthen top and bottom point on front of ht. carve the tt and dt ortion of lug to look like a stretched out version of the bare carved lugs on my process page of my site.

bb- extend point up the front of the st and up the top of dt.

fork-curved w/ hj crown. extended points on inside and outside of crown. V cut in side of crown.

brakes- front road only

dropouts- V polished rear 3-4 inch extended points on front and rear dropouts. I will exend points on the front of the fork, on the back of the ss and on the top of the cs.

stainless seat stay top to be plugged with a stainless cap and layed on the side old school style, but thinned so it looks very refined. Mask a point down the side of the seat stay

ss bridge- cool biplane looking bridge with a circle + V in the middle.

Vanilla script laser cut and brazed on dt and st and polished. Hollow inside filled with blk.

Head badge fully pollished.

Paint- 2003 benz tectite grey.

Brazeons- 2 sets bottle bosses

st angle- 73
ht angle-73.5
tt length 60
bb drop 7 cm
stem length 12 cm

i can't wait to see this bike. however, it'll be strange for me to see this great frame and nice components in grey and black just because I associate that color scheme with steamrollers, older pistas, or odd beaters.

Chimay
01-04-05, 02:47 PM
Hmm. Never thought of color association. I tend to dislike color. I had 3 road bikes this year and only the last one has a small bit of red on it. Sort of a throw back to the old black and white movies. Really admire the old cinematography of lighting and shadow. Took a lot of imagination to make a beautiful picture back then. Anyways, I just thought the gray frame, polished lugs, black parts would look cool together.

As much as I love bikes, I don't think I'd like to own a spare no expense fixie. I like to ride my bikes, not oogle them and worry about scratching it or having it get stolen. All that money on one bike...I could buy nice bikes for my wife and kids with all that dough. Or fix up the house. Add a nice bike workshop/shed. Build a halfpipe in the backyard for the kids (and me too). I'm happy with my $5 garage sale ride. But then again...

I had an after-supper nap and dreamed of a fixie. Equipped as follows (I love how much in detail I am capable of dreaming):
Airborne Sortie frameset
Alpha Q Sub 3 straight blade fork
Easton carbon track bars
Zipp 404 track wheelset
Deda track stem
Sugino Grand Mighty crank w/S3 Cubic chainring
Sugin Gigas sprocket
Selle San Marco Aspide saddle

Don't really remember the rest, but I like where the dream was going...

It would appear Stella has two fronts: Chicago and Philly.
The building fronts are just fronts. No longer tired in their ways. To hide the people watching her. Along the old, redemptive ways.

We are taking over.

chimay,

thx for the specs - it looks to be a helluva ride. i had a thought as well - sacha plans to attend the upcoming "handmade bicycle show" in houston on jan 15, and there will be a frame judging contest. i wonder if he plans to debut your sled at this time...? hence your late-jan delivery? i hope so, as i plan to attend. for info: www.handmadebicycleshow.com

right now for my vanilla, i plan to put on some retro-campy parts (SR pista crank, cobalto levers and brakes), phil wood bb/hubs, CKing hs, no-thread handmade stem from sacha, nitto noodle bars from rivendell. a mix of retro and new stuff. i like the stainless lugs and will likely do the stem and fork, but haven't decided on the frame lugs. i'm eager to see how yours turns out so i can pick and choose the little upgrades that you opted for. i'd love to blow a huge chunk of change on this project, but the wifey is keeping me in check since i'm upgrading my primary road bike in early '06.

i'll keep an eye out for pics, so don't let the crowd here down.

Chimay
01-05-05, 11:06 AM
Although it'd be pretty cool to have my frame judged in a contest, I can't imagine it will be ready in time. This morning Sacha emailed me 10 photos of the lug outlines (black marker on the stainless tubing.) We have to make some changes to the patterns and then he'll start carving. Due to the length of the tip extensions and their complexity, a standard set of lugs could not be carved up. These are being made from scratch on stainless tubing welded together. As it's this early in the process, doubt it'll be good to go in 10 days. (I wish.)
