Classic & Vintage - Vintage Looking New Frame Pumps

I guess the title says it all. Are there any vintage looking frame pumps available? I'm just not into using BB Gun cartridges on my bike. When my brother and I saw CO2 pumps for the first time we both said "WOW they're still making whippet dispensers." Anyone under 50 won't understand that last comment.

Blackburn's carbon fiber frame pump is what I have my Litespeed: http://www.amazon.com/Blackburn-Frame-Pump-Carbon-Fiber/dp/B000BNZ0LK. I don't find this on Blackburn's website so it must be going out of production & you might find a good deal somewhere.

I think there was a recent thread about a older pumps still being made. I have a Silca or two I carry on my clincher equiped bikes to shape up the tire before using the C02.

IMHO your better off carring a pump that works and wil get your tire up 100psi or whatever you like. for that i don't think there is a better pump than the Zefal HPX pums which come in 3 or 4 different lengths. Zefal I believe just reintroduced this a Classic item for around $40.

I'm under 50 and I get it. ;-) I don't know of any modern vintage looking pumps however.

I certainly don't understand the reference and I'm not too far removed from that age. ;) Anyway, getting back OT. I've only got one bike with a frame pump on it currently and would like to know of some options too. Maybe VO will step up to the plate and recreate the alloy body Bluemels pump. That's what I'd like to see personally.

One of my LBS's sells Primus aluminum pumps with red and blue rings. Looks very French, but it also needs two clips/pegs. Also aluminum Tagamex pumps that need one clip. Both work very well, Presta-only. I don't know if they're actually new or just new-old stock. The shops here would rather hang onto stuff for 20 years than mark it down and move it.

+1 on the Zefal pumps for quality and reliability, although with the graphics and all they have kind of a modern look. I know they can be stripped and polished but that's a lot of work. I recently tried to get one powder coated along with a frame, but couldn't figure out how to get all the plastic bits off. The coater assured me they'd either melt or become fatally brittle in the oven so I nixed the idea.

I have a Silca on almost every bike: a few with the alloy Zefals, still available. I find em both on ebay.

I am 41 and i know what a whippet is! I have a alloy framed zefal that i like i recently purchased a park that adjusts to different frame sizes because i ride different bikes and although i use tons of umbrella clips. I want to get those off my paint. find something that works and paint to your specs.

Any type of nitrous oxide tube that you can readily purchase at the store is going to have a foil tip. In order for you to get to the gas you need something to crack the whippet’s foil tip. You also have to release the gas in to a medium so it can warm a bit. Also with N2O dispensers (http://n2odispensers.com/) it is nice if they are small and easily concealable. If you have one of the bigger crackers they are hard to bring to parties without everyone knowing what you are doing. With most N2O whippet dispensers you are going to need a balloon for the whippet’s gas to flow into and then be easily used. Do not buy cheap balloons because they are a waste of money, they will break on you with only a couple of uses. You should always get thick and heavy duty balloons so they don’t break from the extremely cold temperatures that are released when cracking whippets.

The Zefal Lapize is vintage looking and is still being made. I paid $3.15 for mine from xxcycle.com. They have gone up a couple of dollars the last time I looked.

No. I have one, and am glad there's something available in that size, but pumping a tire up to 50 psi is hard work, and I don't know how much higher than that you can go.

That's why I carry CO2 dispensers. The pump is cosmetic and the dispensers serve me if I get a flat.

another consideration for a vintage pump- are they not some new models that go inside the seat tube and can be completly hidden? I like this as I also do not need to worry about it being stolen.

You can get 100 from the HPX but it requires a bit of effort. The big difference is you can lockout the mounting spring on the HPX so your not working against it.

I haven't seen anything like that. Personally, I wouldn't want to have to remove my seatpost to change a flat, but ymmv.

I have this one on three of my four function solo bikes. From 30ft away it looks stylish enough. From 30ft away a flat is still a flat so functionality is important.

My fourth solo bike has carried one of these for several decades. It has no trouble pushing close enough to 100psi to let me keep riding. Admittedly getting that kind of pressure is a lot of work.

Back OT - Do actual "vintage" pumps hold up fairly well over the years, or can you replace the seals in them? I've never come across an older one (or really looked, yet, it's kind of low on my list), but I know even on newer ones they really lack the high pressure capability but I figured this was because of size.

Your question should have been directed at me, right? They may not be avialable from xxcycle anymore. They are available from other sources. Do they have Google in Finland?

I think that pump would probably fit in a seat tube, but I wouldn't put it there.

PSA: This is a very bad idea. A friend of mine (well, brother of a friend) died from nitrous oxide poisoning/asphixiation. He was found in his apartment with a NO mask over his face. There are better ways to get your party on.

+1 on the Zefal HP or HP-X. It's what I've used since the 80's and the design hasn't changed much. It just works.
