(The width of my frame is about 66mm...with the BB it is about 71mm)

You may want to buy the adapter first and install it to see how wide the bb is and what kind of cranks are you running? Then you can measure and see what length spindle you'll need. I'm horrible at this so I usually bite the bullet and just take it in.

In theroy it should work. what kind of crank are you going to use? Unless you have or are buying a Superbe crankset odds are you cranks won't fit that BB spindle.

The length of the spindle depends on the crank you are going to use.

Harris has good customer service, tell them which cranks you want to use and ask if they have a BB to fit it and that adaptor.

The Truvativ adapter ONLY works with sealed-type BB's that you just screw in.

Why wouldn't it work with a non cartridge bb? Because the two adapter cups may not sit perfectly parallel and would be more of an issue with a non sealed bb? I realize it said it in the description but don't see why it wouldn't work.

Not so much a matter of parallel (the frame pretty much ensures they will be parallel), it's the sensitivity to width. I would not try it because the adapter is more or less a press in (the little screws don't do much but hold it in). The frame itself may limit the amount you are able to press it in, so I would not assume you're going to get the same width you started at. My Schwinn super sport has a bit of "overhang" despite using a large vise to get it in as far as possible (there was an internal "ridge" inside). For a couple bucks more you can get a brand new sealed bottom bracket that will work just fine and isn't as sensitive to the width. The newer design where the one side is basically an open circle bearing that the bracket rides in (the bearings aren't impacted as much (if any) by small deviations in overall width of the net setup.

I've got the Trutativ installed with a traditional BB but it was fussy. I had to do a little filing on installation and access to the fixed cup was and is difficult. Probably why sealed units are recommended. I had to use locktite on the fixed cup to keep it snug.

That's my experience as well. They're fussy.

If the adaptors dont fit into the frame you need to either grind the inside of the frame or grind the adaptors. Then there's the challenge of getting the cups tight, for myself the fixed cup is easy because I have a variety of specialized tools but how are your going to tighten the adjusting cup lock ring?

in the big picture is there another option? (besides dumping the frame?)

It doesn't exactly help because it causes other issues but if you can find an older MRP branded BB adapter they don't have the recess for the cups and work with 73mm BB's.

So it could work with 73mm unsealed BB's...if such a thing exists.

Regular spindles for 73mm are still offered. I think the number code on these will start with a 5 instead of a 3.
