View Full Version : A frame and wheel size dilemma

Short story: I'm currently in the market for a new frame because mine is too small. :notamused: I own an awesome wheelset - Mavic A319s with 32 spokes to a Shimano 3N80 dyno hub in the front, 105 hub with 36 spokes in the back. I'd like to keep it if at all possible.

After shopping around a bit, I *love* the fit of the 62cm Trek 1.x and 2.x series. Suckers are like a glove. I'm pretty sure my wheelset won't fit though... the rims are 25mm wide, and take a minimum of 28mm tire. Currently I'm using 28mm Conti Gatorskins. I'm planning on taking the wheelset to the store tomorrow to find out for sure.

If they don't, I'm torn between some options:

A - Get a Trek 1.x or 2.x anyways for the fit, and have the wheelset laced to rims that do fit. I'm reluctant to go with skinny tires... not because I don't like them, but because I don't have enough experience to know if I'd hate them toward the end of a long ride. Would they be too harsh for me personally? Not sure. They seem OK on a short test ride. Not worse, just different.

B - The Trek store suggested considering getting the Trek Ion (cyclocross) frameset instead. Naturally, they don't have one in my size built. This frame would have 6mm less BB drop, a 72 head angle instead of 73.9, longer wheelbase, etc. Other than the obvious road vs cx geometry differences in ride feel, the actual stack and reach, thus fit, would be nearly the same. Within 5mm. Not sure if I want this kinda ride, or a road feel. My current frame is a cyclocross with a 72 head angle. It's extremely stable to the point where I feel there is understeer on fast descents.

C - Get some other frame. I'd really hate to do this as I really want to test ride first. It's nearly impossible to find frames in my size built at stores to test ride. I *think* the reason I like the Treks so much is that they have a long 600mm top tube combined with a tall head tube (240mm on the 62cm) to match. I'm guessing the 60cm Salsa Casseroll would work. It has the same 600mm top tube. The head tube is 210, but likely the axle to crown distance is longer also because of the increased tire clearance. There's no dealers near me though, and I'd be buying it blind. That makes me VERY nervous as I can't handle another ill fitting bike.

Any advice / suggestions? Recommendations for a rim replacement with the same ERD as the A319 so I could reuse spokes? Right now I'm leaning toward buying a Trek, stripping it down to the frame, ebaying the components, then moving my current mostly Ultegra stuff over.

A 28mm won't really fit on my Trek Madone but they use 17X622 rims on it. They measure 20.5MM wide. I put my rear Cyclocross wheel on it Thursday. It measures 22mm. A little tweak on the brakes and rear derailleur and it worked fine as I had a 25 mm tire on it. Would the LBS allow you to try your wheels?

Oh I see that you're going to try that.

Thanks for the info jethro. You wouldn't happen to have a picture of your Madone with that 22m rim / 25mm tire on it would you?

At this point, my gut is telling me to get the Trek, even though it would be a royal PITA to swap components around, rebuild wheels, etc. :(

I've got a 62cm crosscheck. Fits big tires.

The plot thickens... I went to a different store and tried a 61cm Allez. On paper it's nearly the same as the 62cm Trek 1.x/2.x/3.x geometry. I took that for a few test spins, had the stem flipped up, and it was pretty good. My Mavic A319 / 28mm Gatorskin wheelset also fit well, which was a huge relief. I considered buying it on the spot, but the salesman strongly suggested I try a 61cm Secteur as well... similar bike, but with a 2cm higher headtube still. They didn't have it in stock, but are ordering one in for me to try out.

I did consider the crosscheck, but the head tube is too freaking tiny by a large margin.

I'm 6'4", it seemed to work well for my fit, YRMV.
