Did it, completed my first ever 50+ miler (55 miles, but who is counting). I did it solo and with some 20+mph gusts hitting me. Here it is on Strava:

I was tired, sore and had a headache afterwards, all kicking in about an hour after the ride. My guess is that I did not eat nor drink enough on the ride.

Hopefully next weekend I can do a metric or further, as well as on subsequent weekends leading up to my June 10th Tour de Cure century as a red rider!

Very Nice INdeed! I get headaches too seemingly after every long ride. I'm not sure how to avoid it honestly.

Nice! I used to live in Enfield... worked in Windsor.

You probably need to fine tune your food & liquid plan. I had trouble on the first long ride I did this year too (73 miles). Real food is a plus, IMO.

Good luck with the Tour.

Headaches could be a sign of dehydration. You should be sipping water/liquids throughout your rides from start to finish and not waiting until your thirsty.

Oh, and another note, you should be hydrating well before you go. Day before, night before, morning of... skip the booze the night before too if you're concerned.

GREAT job! The wind can be a real killer. No way around it. A few cuss words help though :)

Make sure to dial into pre, during and post ride nutrition. All important. When riding, try to eat and drink something little every 15 minutes which will help your energy level and also cut down on how tired you are at the end of the ride plus the headache MIGHT be from lack of hydration (just a thought).

Great job!

Not too sure I trust the recorded max hr., every ride of mine has a max that seems completely out of whack.

I'll admit it, I had 2 beers the night before. Next time, I'll pass on them...

I definitely was not sipping through out. I would say I was lucky to take a big drink every 45 minutes or so. I only ate twice on the ride as well, once about 1hr 20min into it, and a second time about 2hr 45min in. Breakfast may have been an issue too. I only ate my typical breakfast, 2 pieces of whole wheat toast with Sunbutter and sugar free jelly. Probably should have ate more. Thinking back I definitely did not hydrate enough on the days leading up to the ride.

Live and learn! Thanks!

Nice ride. Well done. You are probably different, but for me, if I stop and force myself to eat and drink at every 20-mile marker, I get through fine and don't feel too bad afterward, (unless the sun is especially intense that day ... after which the rest of the day is trashed.) As others have said, you need to hydrate often.

Great job Fishrising! Hydrate early and often before, during and after the ride. Eat normally before and snack during and you'll likely feel better after the ride.

Years ago (btw...kudos on the accomplishment) when I started touring I had to set an alarm on my watch to beep every 20 min so I'd take a bite or two of food and a gulp of water. It made a huge difference. A bottle of water an hour is an average amount for hard exercise but for me it's more or less dependent on temp, how hard I'm working and humidity, but snacking on carbs (not pure sugar carbs) and drinking water or energy drink is crucial to multi hour riding. I drink plain water for one hour rides. Take a second bottle with energy drink (Heed in my case) for two hour or more rides. For my longest ride (130 miles) I took baggies with Heed in them so I could add them to water I got along the way. Cliff bars, snacks and Heed made that ride possible. No way I could do it without snacking and drinking all along the way.

Next time around, try eating every 15-30 minutes and drinking a little every 15 minutes or so. What worked for me was to set the time for 15 minute alarms and then I ate a little (100 cals or so) and then drink a little. No big chugging. Bad for you and your tummy.
