Hello everyone,

I've been a long time lurker. It's nice to finally be official. :)

Anyway, I'm hoping someone can help me identify a bicycle I saw saw several years ago in southern Iraq. I have my own suspicions as to the make/model of the bicycle but would like to get others' opinions.

Thanks!

Aleks

Welcome to C&V Aleksandr - For a first post you sure made it difficult enough.

Doesn't look like a Raleigh from the headbadge nor a Rudge based on the chain ring. It does appear that the chain-ring has some lettering on it though - which, (if we could make it out) would tell us the brand. BTW, the crank is on he wrong side because (presumably) the photo is flipped. ( If not, it would certainly narrow the possibilities!)

Ummm, I don't see any way to flip that photo, the crank ring is on his left foot side?

*oh, I see now, scanned negative is like a mirror image,...

I'd guess it's on film based on the dust. It's scanned in wrong side up.

auchencrow -- Good catch. The photo was a scanned negative; I must have had the negative strip flipped around when I placed it on the scanner. Here we are:

For the moment, I only have this relatively low-resolution image. I may be able to get a better scan of the negative in a day or two. I might even be able to get a close up of the chainring.

Here it is flipped. I zoomed into the chainring and headbadge, but couldn't make anything out.

Excellent observation. :thumb:

could be one of many bikes manufactured in India!

Seems odd that the brakes are missing!

Maybe a coaster brake?

Maybe a coaster brake?

It has brake levers, but no rods or stirrups.

I took a closer look at a higher resolution photo, but it didn't reveal anything of importance.

So here is my best guess: http://www.flickr.com/photos/permpongi/5160557356/

A 1950s Armstrong bicycle.

Any thoughts? Plausible? Way off?

Cheers,
Aleksandr

Dude looks grumpy. Beyond that, I couldn't tell a thing.
