I would never ride a bike with a damaged frame, but then again, I'm just a big baby when it comes to my toys and would always be self-conscious of it enough that it would make me ride sketchy.

Yeah, thats structural damage in my book.

Especially if you're going to be riding it on the track, I wouldn't trust it.

Hmm seems to be more of a cosmetic damage resulting from perhaps the forced/ possibly idiot removal of a headset cup. You can hide it pretty easily with the help of automotive body work skills/ shops... should be safe to ride through..

To be honest man, I would ride it if it was my size. I don't think that looks like the head tube is gonna cave in or anything.

If I had 750 that would be great I only have 600 but do you know where the shop he bought it from was located?

Seriously.

I don't even understand what could have happened to that head tube.

youd seriously pay 600 for that?
I'm done buying broken crap, now if i did it then id ride it but seriously, unless its like 200 (for good components) i'd pass

Looks like he notched it a couple of times with a hacksaw and tried to clean it up so that the head set would remove and reinstall/press a new one into the headtube ? I'd pass on his f*cked up head tube & frame.

About the only thing worse I could possibly think of would be he did that to the bottom bracket ? I bet Jamis would want to refurb the frame with a new head tube ? That might be pretty expensive to have someone fix that ?

Wow, looks like some dummy tried to remove the headset cup with a punch, then resorted to a hacksaw... I wouldn't pay more than $50 for the complete bike.

old style sonik that's lived a hard life with abusive parents. For $600 buy new.

actually read the ad and it says the headtube "WAS DAMAGED BUT NOW FIXED" - so 100% pass from me.

to further 'WTF?' this situation...

isn't that an IS style integrated headset with drop-in bearings (ie: no press-fit cups)?

IIRC, Sonik's used to come with nice components including an American Classic wheelset and Omnium's. That bike's been damaged by some moron. They stripped all the good components and replaced them with garbage wheels, cranks, saddle, and stem to try swindle some schmuck stupid enough to pay retail for a damaged frame. Those components aren't worth the landfill space they'd end up filling. In short, don't be that schmuck.

Lowball the **** out of it. I like those frames and I didn't think the damage was too bad.

You are right, he has stripped the good components off of it (including the $1000 wheelset and $500 cranks). In mint condition, that bike would be worth about $500 with those components.

Or, he just bought just a frameset.

What are the chances of somebody buying a Sonik frameset and putting components that ****ty on it? That's like putting Campy Record cranks, Phil's, Thomson post and stem, and an Arione on a conversion. It could happen, but I wouldn't buy anything from somebody that stupid.

You've really never seen a nice frame built up with crappy components? For all anyone knows, the guy could've thrown a bunch of junk on it just to sell it.

It doesn't really matter because that frame is ready for the scrapyard at this point.

I don't really see fairly high end aluminum track frames with components that bad. I don't know if I ever have. Then, I'm new to this forum, maybe I'll be surprised. That's like taking a Cervelo P5 and putting a Tiagra group on it.

It could happen.

You assumed that it was stripped, I gave you another possible scenario.

Chances are...?
