In the spirit of both the New Year and the Wonder Bread thread...

I offer up The Cheese Show.

After last evenings New Years Eve party I found one opened and one unopened cheese slice in our fridge. I have placed these 2 cheese slices (Manufacturer-Borden's, Variety-American, Type-White) on an empty deli plate with the hope that once per day I shall photograph them and thus document their life unrefridgerated and at room temperature in our kitchen (the plate will be left on top of a shelf and pulled down once per day for photographing) till such time that the project becomes too smelly, or scary, or dangerous. My hope is to make it to Jan. 1st 2006 but like all epic undertakings-we will begin one step at a time-and this is that first step. Call it an experiment, call it boredom... call it my little gift to The World.

I'm curious, our 5 year old daughter is excited and curious, my wife oddly isn't, let's watch & see what happens...

Let us begin...

Day 1 (1/1/2005)

When the experiment is over you can sell it on eBay and buy a new bike with the profits!

Why not? I thought I saw God in his cheese!

strangely enough, this is far from the dumbest, most boring, idiotic thing on the internet. You should shoot 4x/day cuz it won't last more than a week or two... wife will toss it.

PS: your daughter will remember this forever.

Shouldn't it be "The Processed Cheese Product Show"? I'm pretty sure that stuff's only slightly more cheese-like than Velveeta.

Read the label, Velveeta is more 'cheese-like' than you think and it makes GREAT Mac & Cheese! :)

We'll see how it compares to my Wonder Bread, which is still going strong, by the way. :D

Sometimes there are things between a father and daughter that mothers will never understand.

Day 2 (1/2/2004)

Seems that the opened slice is intensifying in color... perhaps in flavor too? **Note-Shrinkage is evident as well**

Indeed, but seeing that it's just a cheapo Ikea purchase we figured the paint & brush would cost more than the chair.

Are you and your daughter keeping a scrapbook or video diary of this? Someday, she'll look back and laugh about it and think you are the coolest dad.

Kudos for getting your daughter interested in science so early in life!

Thanks for the kind words... yes, we are keeping a journal on its day to day progress. As far as the coolest dad thing goes-I can only hope so considering my wife thinks I'm less cool as each year passes.

I got nothing against Velveeta and other almost-cheese products. I used to eat Cheez Whiz by the jar when I was a kid. Not a fan of mac and cheese, tho. Guess I'm a pasta and cheese snob at my advanced age.;) I lost my train of thought-derailed, I guess....

Neat experiment, btw. I "experiment" accidentally all the time.

Now this is a worthwhile experiment! I am certainly looking forward to how this one turns out!

BTW...want to see a cool experiment site check this one out, these kids have way too much time on their hands but they do have some interesting findings:

the change is much more extreme if you just eat them.

This thread has made me hungry (oddly enough) I make a what I call a "Ghetto Cheese" sandwich. This little snack served me well when I was poor and didn't cook or wash dishes much.

Make two slices of toast, add two American cheese singles put in the microwave for about 23 seconds (until the cheese just starts oozing out the sides) open the microwave and eat. No dishes, no mess, and without excess grease.

That's nasty. I don't even think the people in the ghetto would eat that, dood. ;)

Believe it or don't.... One hospital snack bar I went to made their $2.25 'grilled cheese' sandwiches that way. I saw how they were making it and walked out.

Not a bad profit margin if you consider that I can get a package of cheese and a loaf of bread for that.

And the hospital probably gets bulk prices, so they probably pay even less than half of that.

I have perfected the art of the grilled cheese, but it doesn't involve American cheese (stuff is an abomination)

Take two slices of sourdough bread, spread a thin (1/16th of an inch or so) layer of cream cheese on one side of each.
Sprinkle salt onto one piece, and pepper on the other.
Thinly slice 2 or 3 different cheeses (also about 1/16th of an inch - I typically use a sharp cheddar and a marble jack) and layer on one slice. Cross the slices at 90 degree angles. Never use grated cheese.
Heat skillet on medium high, and add about a tablespoon of butter (don't allow it to turn brown, and the amount may need to be increased depending on the size of the bread). Sop it up with one side of the bread, grill to golden brown.
Remove slice from heat for about 30 seconds, long enough to melt another tablespoon of butter. Repeat sopping and grilling.
Slice in half, eat, enjoy pleasant sound of arteries hardening.

I dunno - the cream cheese makes all the difference.

I like the way you worked the bike in to keep this thread "bicycle orientated."

And I wonder if dried American Cheese could be used as a boot in a tire for slash?

Shrinkage seems to be falling off a bit. The texture is starting to feel like plastic. Curiously odd, these cheese slices...

Yeah, at this point in the process that's usually how it goes. Have you not ever accidentally(or purposefully) left processed cheese out before?

Raiyn, my dad likes to nuke sam'iches. I just don't get it. The bread always gets all chewy and nasty, in my experience. Maybe the toasting cancels that out. I really don't mind taking the time to fry it up in the skillet. Mmm, pannini.

And Day 6...

Interesting today... look at the amount of curl beginning on the opened slice. Perhaps it will completely curl over? Time will tell. The unopened slice shows almost no reduction in size and is surprisingly soft & flexible to the touch.

I find this most interesting! I'm waiting for the unopened slice, or opened slice for that matter to show signs of molding. Although I figure the opened slice will most likely dry out before mold can grow.

Do you think you might cook it when the experiment is over? ;)

Absolutely no change with the wrapped cheese? Nothing? Nada?

I say you should add a bowl of cheeze dip- that stuff in a can. That would be a cool side-by-side.

Unopened slice is still flexible & soft, odd. Opened slice is taking on a formica-like feel... could be a cheap way to tile your bathroom floor.
