What is available as far as tubular track wheelsets with a low profile aluminum rim? The campy set is a bit out of my price range. Also what aluminum tubular rims are popular among those who don't run deep carbon rims if I decide to lace something up?

thanks

I use the Velocity Pro Elite (also known as "Deep V") tubular rim. It has served me well going on 3 seasons. Before that, I used the clincher "Deep V" rims.

They can be had for very reasonable prices and are easy to get. Lots of hole options.

There are many others out there, too. But, this is what I've used.

Maybe look into the Gipiemme 716 Pista

I see the prices vary a lot based on google searches. I guess it really depends on where you buy them.

It has a low spoke count, which would be fine for enduro types or smaller riders producing less torque.

While not currently available, cane creek made a really nice aluminum tubular wheelset called the volos. They came stock on a lot of pista concepts and stuff, so you can find the wheelsets for sale on ebay for cheap most of the time. That's the only prebuilt wheelset that I can think of off the top of my head.

As far as nice aluminum rims, velocity also makes the 'escape' rim, which is what the volos wheelset used. Mavic makes the reflex rim, which is nice. Alex rims make a few tubular rims, so does ambrosio and a few others.

Edit: I just checked the planet-x website and they seem to sell some prebuilt alu tubulars: http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/WPPXMODELA/planet_x_model_a_tubular_wheels_(pair)

Check Ebay. There are cheap Mavic Reflex based wheels out there for $200 or so with track hubs. It's kind of a workhorse rim...tubular equivalent of an Open Pro.

I use them to hold my bike up or if I'm training/warming up on an outdoor track.

Gipiemme supplied this rim for the original Campagnolo Shamals back in the 90's. The rim has tested to be as fast indoors at 0 degrees yaw as the non Firecrest 808!
