General Cycling Discussion - Bike shorts question

Or more specifically, a baggy, MTB shorts question.

I know that on regular road shorts, underwear shouldn't be worn underneath the shorts. Does that hold true for MTB shorts as well? With their baggy "outer shell" any undie lines would not be seen, right? Also, it would prevent any signs of an "accident" appearing in/on the lining.

Any info will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It isn't about lines- the chamois liner is what should be against your skin to avoid chafing, rash and saddle sores.

And absorbs and transports sweat. there are padded liner shorts
to wear underneath your MTB baggies , they cost as much as budget bike shorts.

are there still people worried about "panty lines" sheesh.

Typical "regular road shorts" are tight single-piece items. Where you got the strange idea that road shorts are worn with underwear is completely not clear to me.

Ah being that the post you quoted says that he knows underwear aren't worn with road shorts where you got the idea otherwise is not clear to me. Although I am assuming it is a troll and a weak one at that.

As a quick follow-up question, when it comes to washing bike shorts, is it safe to put them in the dryer, or should they be hung over the back of a chair (for example) to "air" dry?

They will last longer with an air dry.

Most clothes, including cycling clothes, have fabric care labels.

Won't have to wash shorts as often if underwear is worn. Lots of sporty wicking poly briefs on the market.

Well, I haven't bought the shorts yet, that's why I'm asking all these questions. Want to know more about the shorts before I purchase a pair (or two). Once I have shorts in hand, in a manner of speaking, I can follow the care labels.

The chamois will last longer if you air dry it. Most people OVERDRY clothes and the high heat is very damaging. I hand wash my shorts, toss them into the washer to spin dry and hang them up to dry. They usually dry overnight.

Most dryers have both a "delicate" setting with very low heat, and an "air only" setting, which basically is room temperature ambient air. You won't hurt your bike shorts using either. Don't dry them on high or medium heat.

Spanex/lycra fabrics are threads of rubber in a knit nylon matrix.
and drying heat breaks down the rubber faster than just wear and tear,

Maybe in a mix with other stuff at low heat will be OK.

in an Apt, the buck per load, in the mahhines next door . I pull out the fast dry stuff, and spend the money drying cottons hot enough.
But waist bands on the 'Y fronts' break down, then.

One more good reason not to wear y fronts.

Got the shorts about a week ago, and all I can say is "why the heck did I wait so long to buy them?" What a difference in the comfort level of my rides now versus a week ago!!

Since I've ruled out a new bike (for the time being anyway), now I'm wondering what I'll upgrade to next, clipless pedals??

If you go for the clipless pedals, be sure to pay attention to the tag that says 'Machine wash warm, air dry only'. :lol:

I put my shorts in the dryer, on the delicate setting. Jerseys go in the same load. As far as underwear, if the shorts have a pad then they don't need underwear. I have quite a few unlined running shorts that I wear with coolmax briefs. No padding required for recumbents! I've found that in 90+F weather, though, the padded shorts seem to work better to prevent chafing; as the coolmax cannot wick as fast as I'm sweating.

I wear padded Shorts or Bibs. The MTB shorts have a padded liner so none of them are worn with underwear. However Underarmour does work for wicking with unpadded shorts. I don't tend to use the dryer if I can help it and bike shorts and jerseys dry pretty fast in the sun.
