The jist to this thread is movies that everyone just couldn't stop dissin', but you really enjoyed. Not guilty pleasures, that you know suck but liked anyway, but movies you actually thought were great that no one gave a fair shake to.I was watching "Batman Forever" (yes the one with Val Kilmer.) and it gave me the inspiration for this thread, as I was the only one on earth who liked it.
OR
Movies everyone really loved and critics raved about, but you just couldn't see anything good about. "The English Patient" comes to mind. Oh, I also made the mistake of buying "Lost in Translation" before renting it. What a turkey! I know I've never been to film school, but I'm not completely obtuse to craft, subtlety, etc. But DANG, what a boring, over-rated POS. Sucks ,cuz I love Bill Murray.

I loved The Thin Red Line though most people seemed bored to death with it.
I maintain that both the first and second parts of Kill Bill are total and undeniable sh*t. All except for the animated section in the first one, but I feel I can thank Production IG for that one. For that matter, though, there is very little Tarantino that I like in the least. Pulp Fiction was OK. Reservoir Dogs is among the worst films ever to develop cult followings.
And while we're talking movies and I'm b*tching about Tarantino, I hate how he keeps getting these fantastic Chinese films released on DVD in the US, but when you see it in the store, the biggest name on the outside of the box is TARANTINO screaming at you as though he actually had something to do with the fact that the film is good, which he did not in any way whatsoever.
I loved Lost in Translation but can see how others would find it boring. I love films that succeed in making something wonderful out of subtle, ordinary events in life and don't beat you over the head with explosions and action scenes and things like that.
Welcome to the Dollhouse. It was funny as hell. Still is.

I liked Thin Red Line a lot, it had a whole lot of unique cinematography going for it. As far as Tarantino goes, he's kind of like a lot of "voice of a generation" type artists who make a name for themselves, then are cursed to live up to it with everything they do. I'd like to see Tarantino buy a new bag of tricks, 'cuz the stuff that worked fo "Pulp Fiction" is tired because everyone's been copying it for the last ten years. "The Quentin Tarantino Collection" has some excellent foreign films in it's lineup, that I'm just glad are getting some exposure to an American audience.
I'm going to see the "Phantom" tomorrow, I hope it's as good as the stage show!

Flash Gordon was a fun movie. The 1980 version, btw. Saw it again the other day and was amazed at how many big names were actually in it. Gotta love Brian Blessed's booming delivery(and costume LOL). Had some racy stuff in it, too, IMO.
That reminded me of The Ice Pirates, 1984. I don't care for it so much anymore, but at the time I thought it was pretty cool. Fairly big names in this, too. Still got a bit of a soft spot for it--probably due to the fact that I saw it as an adolescent.
LOL All that just reminded me of Time Bandits, '81. Practically a Python pic. Ah, good times.... I better stop before I remember too much.;)

'The Thin Red Line' is a very good movie. It suffered by comparison with 'Saving Private Ryan' which came out at the same time.
Ok, I'll admit it, one of my all time favorite films... Maniac.
Yes, that horific 1980 sleazbag of a horror movie that's not a horror movie. Spinell got so deep inside the mind of the psycotic as to be revolting and Savini's special effects were second to none. The 'shotgun scene' has got to be the best ever.
As an affectionado of GOOD horror/gore movies (Thank you Mr. Romero) I give this two dismembered thumbs up! :D

I liked romeo & julliet (the remake with Leonardo DeCrappio)
It may not be fantastic, but it was a very original idea (trying to set shakespeare, line for line, in a modern fantasy setting), and it nearly worked if it wasnt for the overdoing of it. I can't help but laugh about the vault...neon gravemarkers was just overkill....whats next, UV reactive holy water :p
Aside from that, though it was a pretty good job, and I don't know why everyone dogged it so badly.

I thought Romeo+Juliet was excellent, but it's really hard to screw up Shakespeare!
Any Romero Zombie movie, and a lot of Savini stuff, is classic in my opinion.

Eyes Wide Shut and the remake of Solaris -- All I get from everyone I know (including my wife) is a roll of the eyes and a shake of the head.
Alien: Resurrection -- I'll watch it until the skinned muppet alien makes it's appearance, then I'll switch it off. Only my love for the director drove me to buy a copy of the wretched thing, and yet do I have copies of Amelie and The City of Lost Children? Noooo. That's just not right.
Wild Things -- So sue me.

Sad business, that. I hope he has learned to steer clear of the Hollywood soul-sucking machine, though for all I know his countrymen may have embraced Alien: Resurrection as a masterpiece.

Like Jerry Lewis? "Delicatessen" is my favorite film by him, by the way. (Jeunet, not Jerry Lewis!)

Delicatessen was my introduction to Jeunet. Brilliant! His new one, A Very Long Engagement, is getting raves.
As to the original subject of this thread: ever see a cheapie entitled Mosquito? One of the worst found-on-cable-during-a-lazy-channel-surfing-weekend-afternoon I've ever seen, but if you can't find joy in watching a giant rubber mosquito flying out of an outhouse, you're dead inside. :p

Oh Gods, you just reminded me of one called Night of the Lepus, a movie made in the early '70s about giant bunny rabbits. Much howl factor there. DeForest Kelly was in the cast, perhaps one of the first indicators for him that the transition from Star Trek was going to be an uphill slog at best.

"Food of the Gods" had lots of giant rats in it, and again, was good/bad.

Yeah, that was sweet. Wait, I'm a man! I still liked that movie, tho. Nothin' like a hot, killer alien chick. Second one--not so good, IMO.
I still quote stuff from Dude, Where's My Car. "And then..." "No 'and then'!" *pause* "And then..."

Tron. Seems no one likes it but me.
Anyone ever see "Bad Lieutenant" with Harvey Keitel,
or "Bullet" with Mickey Rourke?
I'll admit I even like a few Stallone Movies. Copland, Get Carter..might have to draw the line at Tango and Cash....

Oh, and for one nobody has likely seen, catch 22 (made in 1970, to not be mistaken with some music video crap). Awesome movie

I actually thought Catch 22 was rubbish. I don't think any movie could do justice to the book anyway.
I'm not dissing your taste in movies, it's just that the book is arguably one of the greatest books in the english language and the movie sadly fails to live up to it.

I'm apparently the only person willing to admit to liking Hudson Hawk.
One of my all time favourite movies, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, also seems to have dropped below the popular culture radar.
As for hugely popular movies that did nothing for me, definitely Silence of The Lambs. Sorry, it's just another cop movie. And yeah, The English Patient was a huge yawnfest.

Man, I loved Hudson Hawk, that seemed like one of bandwagon-style critical lynchings the media engages in from time to time. (Sort of like when Howard Dean went from "The Man Who Would Save The Left" to "The Screamer!")
Baron Munchausen is awesome, but even better when you're extremely high. :)

Man, there are so many....here are some that I liked, but get little respect from my family and friends:
Captain Ron
Big Trouble in Little China
Eating Raoul
The Commitments
Most of the Star Trek movies.

OK....had a few more thoughts...particularly geeky ones.
For starters, there's .hack//sign etc. that seems to have a bit of a cult following. My personal take on it is that it should be renamed .hack//mostpointlessthingever and then purposefully erased from the history of anime.
I loved Serial Experiments Lain, which everybody regards as hugely weird (and justifiably so), but which a lot of people also seem to hate with unreasonable levels of enthusiasm.
